Steam - Fatal Error (Steam needs to be online to update....)
Nothing special about my system or network.... been playing steam the last week with no problems. Look like it's trying to update- I see it progress to about 2MB/76MB and then it just dies and gives me the following error:

Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

FYI - My network is not going down.

Anyone having the same issue / have a fix?

ok i have an good news for dongle users. first connect the dongle then activate it , then start steam after it just connected to the internet. you have to do it fast or the update will not work.

the thing that will happen is first it will give the speed of 1.5 mb/s only for 1to 5 minuites and the steam will update in no time and errors.
Hey guys and gals, I don't know if this is of any use to you, but I was having the same issue, I tried all of the fixes I could possibly find on the forums to no avail, so I left it for a few hours and tried it just after midnight before going to sleep and it downloaded after two attempts, I'm pretty sure internet traffic is causing this issue for some. Give it a go.
Hey Guys - I had this problem and Fixed it by Unistalling Steam from my PC, Downloading it on my Dad's PC (in a differnt household on a different network) Then saving that Steam File onto a USB pen drive and transferring it onto my PC. started Steam on my PC and it worked fine. Hope this helps.
Hey , this will work 92% garenty.

First copy the steam data from any steam user whom you know has fixed his problem . ask him that to copy the steam folder from program files in disk drive -C , take it from him/her and kip it. re install steam and when it will give error. copy the things in the steam folder (donot copy the hole folder , copy the components in the steam folder which you have got from your friend)and go to - C:\Program Files- there you will find a folder named steam go to it and past it all.
steart updatind steam again it will show either one of this (41,999 kb left) or (verifing installetion some thing like that) . when it will show the first one restart the pc, bit when it will showthe second one then it is a releaf . Alas

caution- scan it for virus and see that all files are present or not. (total size of the folder aprox 300mb) take it from the person who has the same operating system as you.

OK so i had this same issue a couple of moments ago due to not updating steam in quite a while (pain in the arse) up until i noticed a couple of bugs within the program.
( I have a system logging program that logs any breaks in steady data.....displays raw real time data basically) any who basically what i have found out that it isn't a bug within the program just a couple of mis-communication with the programs themselves......
Basically its like a mod if you have overlapping data the readout for the original program will crash....so simple fix would be deleting those programs right.....?
Wrong after a couple of hours of messing around with files that i have put on my computer the logs still weren't in order....so whats the simple fix you ask?
1.Uninstall steam on your computer restart,
2.log in download steam as an admin on your computer ....
3.restart make a new USER (computer not steam) account (WITHOUT LOGGING INTO ADMIN ACCOUNT)
3.run the steam update/ re install and it should let you play away all day without any mishaps as long as it is the first open it doesn't have any conflicts with any other programs so make sure your start up programs are just the ones you need and nothing else......hopefully this helps you get back to gaming asap because i know how frustrating this is.....lemme know how it turns out fr ya'll

This works on linux and windows

but in windows 7 or 8 their is sum problem . that is it will download the setup but not install . can anyone help about this i cannot play source.
Same here. I tried doing every solution there was on the internet, Non of them worked.
This started happening when i activated steam beta, and whenever i try to launch steam the update goes about 1/4 way and then stops with the messages Fatal error steams needs to be online to update. Please check your connection and try again.

And to make matters worse I can't find my steamapps folder, so now all my games are gone.

*sighs and stares longingly into the sunset*

Same here ;~;
steam is a full sicured donkey
hey there. i read through this feed for help and i remembered as i was reading that i changed my DSN server preferred so i could watch American netflix. after flushing my servers( simply removing the server ip from the internet protocol verson 4 user in my router via my computer ) i started the update after and it works.
So apparently this problem has decided to rear it's ugly head once again, and I can't find a fix for it. According to Steam Client I don't have a connection when I try running. When I try using the SteamTmp app, it says it cannot contact the Steam network. Furthermore, simply signing into my account caused problems because apparently Steam's own servers can't even recognize my computer now. Anybody able to tell me what the frick is going on here???
