Just a question about DirectX and Steam

Hi everyone,
Does Steam support DirectX 11? I have a Windows 8 machine with DX 11 installed but I can not play Garry's Mod (I just bought it along with my new steam account)

Steam doesn't use DirectX so... that's not the question you need to ask.

What you need to do is install DirectX9. There are literally hundreds of different versions of DirectX and not just the core '11' that people see. Installing DX9 will not break DX11, there may be several core files that it needs that just aren't installed with just DX11.

Ok, but why does Gmod keep telling me to download DX 9? 11 is backwards compatible right?

It says:

"Error! Your Directx Runtime is out of date. Downlad and install this file from Microsoft."
and then it takes me here:

Sorry for not knowing how to do this, I'm new to PC games.

I guess the question I am asking is will dx9 work along side dx11?

OP's problem is not understanding how directx works. This is as good a place to ask as any.

As for how directx works, see KARR's post. There are multiple directx releases and you can install them simultaneously without them overwriting each other. Garry's Mod needs the dx9 executable that came with it, so you need to install that to play it.

Ok thanks a bunch! As I said I am new to PC gaming and have no idea what I am doing. I will try to install the DX9 Gmod wants me to install. Hopefully it will work!
