Xbox 360 controller in Half-Life 2 and Half-life episode one

I have the Orange Box on my laptop. Portal, Episode two and Team Fortress work flawlessly wiht my xbox 360 controller. But HL2 and HL2 episode one don't seem to have automatic xbox 360 controller support. I read the page in steam showing what to do but I still can't understand it fully. I managed to get it working but it still feels not complete and I am pretty sure I am missing something. So, please explain in detail what to do with the damn cfg file as if I am the biggest noob on the earth :)

You used to have to run the particular command in a CFG file and also add this command to your launch options, otherwise it can get pretty hard to hit all the thin and fast enemies -- +sk_autoaim_mode 2

But I just checked, and I haven't needed to do any CFG files (though I still use the autoaim command. I am not sure if it's redundant now) because I just select 'gamepad' in control options and the game changes the interface to the same as the console version. It even allows menu navigation with the D-Pad.

No select gamepad in mine Half-life 2 and Half-life episode one (there is in episode two and the rest of the orange box)
