No problem. The irony is that I needed to fix it so I can get the Steam Hardware badge and I never use the controller
I went on microsoft, downlaoded the driver, and it didn't work. Then I tried manually updating the driver (follow this post)
My problem was that I couldn't find it, since I kept looking at the bottom of the list for "Xbox." I got really frustrated and confused and almost bought an official controller, but it turns out the driver was listed as "Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class." It was grouped up with a bunch of other microsoft drivers, so I overlooked it.
Hope this helps someone!
The driver I had something with "Xbox" in it, so I'm not sure if everyone gets the same driver based on the controller. Gamestop has more than one model of their controllers so it might be that.
To fix it, I had came across this page and followed the outdated video posted on the first page of this thread - BUT stopped after the part that mentions going into your Device Manager. Let me explain.
- Type in Device Manager into your Start (bottom left - note that I am using windows 7).
- Select 'Other Devices' and scroll to the appropriate controller that you have plugged in (USB 2.0)
- Right click your controller and select 'Update Driver Software'
- You will have two options: 'Search automatically for updated driver software' and 'Browse my computer for driver software.' Select the first one (Search Automatically - via internet).
After I had done that, it brought me to the correct driver software. I followed the on-screen instructions and it worked like a charm. There may of course be an easier/alternative to this. Just wanted to share how I got mine working. :)
Please note that I downloaded the software from this website first, it is official Microsoft stuff...

I followed your idea all the way through but that didn't completely work for me, when I selected the first option (Search Automatically - via internet) it came up with a message telling me to go to the manufacturer, I then went back and selected the second option and I selected the "Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class" driver that I downloaded before hand, I then selected the first option (The first Wired Xbox controller option) and now it's working like a charm, hope this helps to anyone else who may read this thread....
