Cannot connect to steam server?
Hey guys, I've been unable to connect to steam since yesterday. Most of the time this will sort it self out, after numerous failed attempts i lost my patience and deleted steam from my computer. Now when i try to start steam i get the 'steam is updating' box but then i get this error.

Steam.exe(main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the internet.

So i tried to do numerous things, such as restarting my computer, restarting steam, restarting my router, set a static ip for my computer, disable and re -enable my network.
None of these seem to work. I thought it could be a router problem, however my laptop seems to connect fine to steam network.

So i tried another to look for possible programs that interfere with steam, i went through this and pretty much deleted everything listed on there https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289

I completely deleted my anti virus disabled my firewall, it still gives me the same problem. Anyone got a solution to this strange problem?

same for me, sick as ♥♥♥♥ man, done it on and off for the last 2 weeks now, sent them an email and heard nothing back from them, they are happy enough to take all our money but wont pull their fingers out when it comes to a server problem with steam, obvious problem when plenty of people are having this issue, sort it out steam!!

I finally fixed my connection issue. I had super antispyware installed on my computer and I added steam to the exception list. I haven't even ran that program in ages. I also did a clean install of my tcp/ip drivers using xp tcp/ip repair.

Nice one mate! Unfortunately I got rid of of all my anti spyware and anti virus software, so in my case that can't be the problem. I tried the TCP/IP repair but it seems like a no go :/.

Anyone else have any ideas or solutions based of their own experience?

I also noticed In msconfig under the services tab that pnkbstra, pnkbstrb, and steam client service were unchecked. The pnkbstr is an anticheating program that i think steam uses. After checking these be sure to restart though.

Hey guys i got it working! I thought that my ISP might not like the large downloads ive been doing on my computer with steam. So since my IP address is always the same I tried changing it to something else. Thanks for all the help guys!

Well I'm not 100% sure if that's the case, its just my assumption based on the fact that another ip worked. Basically what i did was go into the networks settings and into my adaptor settings and changed my TCP/IPv4 settings from dynamic and static, therefore forcing a different ip address for my computer

I had the same problem and i was trying to fix it for the whole day and i could not, I looked up Google and you tube but nothing worked. Now i don't know if this is a trick or a random coincidence but i changed my name on the steam website not the client , i tried it on steam client and nothing happened , then i typed it in my original username ( not the one i just changed to) and it sent me a verification code which i typed in and it logged me on !

I've gone through and tried every other article and link from above, but nothing is working for me. NOTE: I'm not the administrator on my computer, and I think it needs a re-installation, which I am unable to preform without admin functions. When attempting to boot up Steam, I sometimes get the login window, but most of the time I get this message:

Could not connect to Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your internet connection, or with the Steam Network. Please visit www.steampowered.com for more info.

Any ideas, or do I need to ask my system admin about a re-installation?

Guys, if you have to change your ip address to static the problem is that your routers DHCP is failing. Sometimes a firmware update or factory reset will fix the router. A static ip is a good idea though.

That is not the ip address your ISP sees. That is an internal ip address the router sees. DHCP is not working correctly. Most likely that is your routers fault but it could be something on your PC also.
