However ther are workarounds for this
https://code.google.com/p/x360ce/
Didn't work with the Big Picture Beta though. I'll try it now, but it probably won't work...
Valve could obviously just support Direct Input... at least for the Steam menu.
Edit: Nope, still doesn't work.
Valve supports DirectInput
GAMES don't which si the problem. All games pertty much use Xinput. Again blame MS for making an entirely parallel input API for ONE controller and dumping directinput as a standard.
It DOES NOT support Direct Input in Big Picture mode. I've tried.
And I don't blame MS because there really is no reason to. Just dump a Direct Input dll in the Steam folder Valve, and let people reassign the buttons as they please, if you're to lazy to do it yourself.
Again the problem is similar to the issue with the primary display problem. Games dont' support non xinput controllers, which means that if you say your games are 'controller enabled' then users will be confused why it works in BPM but not in the game. You're just deferring the problem which generates more confusion.
again MS decided to make xinput for no actual reason especially when evertyhign else about directx was about providing a consistent api input specifically so users wouldnt be eternally confused about everything.
can I use the x360ce on big picture mode or will I be just wasting my time?
X360ce depends on custom xinput dll files. Steam checks its bearings on startup and upon detecting a "xinput1_3.dll" different from his, will re-download that file, effectively disabling x360ce. Funnily, you'll have no problem using x360ce with the actual games. But it is a no-go with big picture itself. I doubt this will ever get fixed since it depends on a .dll.
