(please read posts #115 and up) Internet keeps disconnecting when downloading games from steam?
Whenever I start downloading a game from the store, my internet stops working. The little yellow triangle pops up next to the internet signal icon, and the internet ''connection is limited''. I already reinstalled steam. Didn't help. And it's not just one game, it's all of them. i can't download anything. Anyone has any tips on how to solve this?

Moderator note: this appears to be fixed or at least a simple workaround has been found, please read the posts indicated in the edited title.

I am having the same problem, I saw 2 answers that actually seemed to work but it comes with a cost. The first one was to change the encryption for your router from AEP to TKIP. The problem with this one is that it seems to slow the speeds down and is less secure. The second answer was to get a VPN. The bad part about this is that, most VPN's are not free. The free ones tend to not be as good either. There are also VPN's that are hypocritical meaning that they protect your information, but they themselves look at it. I for 1 do not care If a VPN looks at my stuff since the only really thing they can do with it is to give me ads, but I have adblock and can get rid of any ads. There is one last VPN option called openVPN which is pretty much just a general layout of a VPN that you setup yourself. Its free and its trustworthy because you do the work... The issue with this is, if you don't know how to set it up, it will most likely not work (or worst case senario you open your information to everyone)
Did you try the other fixes in this thread?

I did 2 things, and I am not sure which helped.
1. Turn off QoS Settings in your Wifi Adapter Properties.
2. in Steam Settings, limit download bandwidth. I have a 60Mbps connection. I turned down my Steam download setting to <1Mbps.

hope this works for you.
I'm not sure what changed, but I started having this issue a few weeks ago and there have been no recent changes to my build. My desktop is on a wired connection. I skimmed this thread and tried some of the suggestions, and surprisingly the one that worked for me was to go into adapter configuration -> advanced -> speed & duplex. I changed mine from auto to 100Mbps half duplex, the adapter reset itself and no problems since. Weird. Give it a shot.
Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Setting > Right click your connection > Properties > Configure > Advanced > Wireless Mode tab > Value: "IEEE 802.11b/g/n" Change to "IEEE 802.11b/g > Save and exit.

Solved the problem for me
I belive the reason that setting encryption to TKIP or changing the adapter settings from IEEE 802.11b/g/n to IEEE 802.11b/g is working for so many of us is that this effectively reduces download speeds to a rate that doesn't overload older wireless adapters. In my case, so long as the download speed did not exceed 3MBps, the connection didn't short out the adapter (a Belkin N300). What I'm still not sure of is why this only seems to apply to bandwidth coming from Steam, but not other sources (Youtube, Origin, etc.)

I had this problem as well. It turns out my wi-fi was causing it. Now I connect to the modem by the cable and it's working 100% fine.

Well, it was your wi-fi ... or something that Steam causes when using wi-fi.
This is a weird bug that only happens in that exact situation.
I was having this problem and it seemed that it was because as I moved my computer I switched USB ports from when I first installed it. Moved it back and no problems since, but the one where I disabled IP2 seemed to prolong the disconnections.
Guys i just found the solution! You have to turn off that your computer saves energy and turn offs the adapter :D
I have this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problem too wtf

I have this problem. I just bought a game that requires > 40gb to install, and as soon as it began installing BOOM - my internet connection went down. My internet stays off for approximately 3 minutes, then comes back on for 30 seconds before disconnecting again. Strangely, I have installed dozens of games from steam before and I am just experiencing this issue for the first time.

I've tried several of the fixes suggested, and none of them seem to work.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem?
For 40GB I would try ethernet :) or ethernet to another computer that is connected by wifi and can route or proxy your PC's network traffic
