Emoticons appear as squares

I opened up my chat window to look at the new emoticons. All of them except (R) and TM appear as squares on my computer. Is this because I still use Windows XP, or is it something else?

NOTE: I have not tried using them to see if people see them as squares yet.

The square where text should be means the font isn't supported. Have you modified the default font on Steam at all?

It might be some sort of bug but you have to enable DirectWrite in settings > interface

Its still beta so a few weeks from now it should be fine i guess

maybe your computer can not render them due to your graphics card?

This has happened when others try using unicode on me before, so I don't think it's because it's a beta.

This won't be it. It's a font issue, nothing more.

As far as I'm aware, Steam uses Ariel font. I don't know how to fix font issues because I've never broken it.

I'm not using IE7 unless that's the browser the steam client uses within itself. Because these problems are in the steam client, not in web browsing.

I did change my font to a smaller size when it first went bigger. I am now only seeing squares other than ® and ™. I "reinstalled by deleting everything and then clicking on steam app. But I still cant see the damn emotis!

All hope is not lost...(but some is). We can use emoticons that were created in crafting badges: But the other ones don't work for all of us. Nobody has pinned down the culprit yet.

I looked into my steamtyles file and my font-sizes were the same as a friends. All I can say is make sure you have DirectWrite enabled under Steam>Settings>Interface :)
