Mount and blade CD key not working...Steam help please?

My friend bought me a Mount and blade Warband Serial Key recently (i was right beside him when he did it, he already had the game) i went to 'activate a product' and put the code in and it didnt work.....it said invalid and it greatly dissapointed me. help?

Actually, the activate product doesnt take the 16-digit serial keys, so i went on the demo and it says restart demo to enter key....but i dont get an option?
do i have to get the demo from taleworlds?

I purchased the Mount and Blade Warband Product from Best Buy and the product only has a 24 digit key. The product was correctly sealed which only means that it could be a factory direct issue. Since I am missing only one number I guess I could just try ♥♥♥♥ til it works, but the situation remains quite frustrating.

There was a thing where you can change your CD key to a steam version on their forums. That is what i did. Although i got 2 M&B on my PC
