ERROR "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the internet"
I know there have been a lot of posts on this issue.

I get the above error message when I try to start Steam on my PC (Windows 7). I am able to start Steam and connect properly on my Mac laptop. Both computers are on the same wireless network.

When I launch Steam on the PC it goes straight to Updating Steam dialog, but then throws the error because it can't connect.

I ran Firebind Steam test on my PC and got Failure on TCP 27030 (TCP Handshake Connection Timeout) everything else passed.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and have no other av software installed. I have tried disabling real-time protection and turning off the firewall, re-installing steam, restarting etc.

Any ideas?

I was advised to do a manual uninstall and removal of Steam by support, but it didn't work at the time. The problem seems to be different for all of us though. Contact steam support and hope for the best would be my best suggestion.
