Unable to start up Portal 2

I've been having troubles getting Portal 2 to start up, I try to start it up, it says I'm in the game for a few seconds (even though the window never pops up) and then it says I'm no longer playing the game! I'm not even getting an error message! Can someone help me? I just bought the game for the PC today and I desperately want to play it!

Try verifying game cache, sometimes steam does not download everything needed to play (a) game.

Steam > Right click game > Properties > Local files > Verify ..

I've already tried that and the cache was perfectly fine.
