How do you run Origin games with steam overlay?
I added Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 to my steam library, but when I run through Steam, origin would pop up then game would run, but it wouldn't be on steam. It worked before, but now it doesn't work anymore.

Hi guys.

I've been playing Mass Effect 3 in conjunction with the Steam overlay for years, mainly for the screenshot functionality. I didn't even need to follow TheManuel's steps: all I had to do was add both Origin and ME3 as non-Steam games and launch ME3 from Steam. As recently as February of this year, this was working perfectly.

However, I tried launching ME3 again today in the exact same way, and the overlay no longer comes up. Steam still recognises and shows my friends that I'm playing ME3, but I have no access to the overlay and the screenshot key does nothing.

Having found this thread, I followed all of the steps outlined in TheManuel's post but they didn't help. I have also tried:
- setting the Steam, Origin and ME3 executables to run in admin mode
- setting ME3 to run in a borderless window instead of fullscreen mode
- and, of course, restarting my PC
and these haven't made any difference either.

I can still access the overlay just fine in ME2 (non-Steam), so it's not a general non-Steam game problem. It's most probably an issue with ME3 having to run as a child process of Origin. It may be notable that the Steam overlay doesn't come up in Origin itself when I run that as a non-Steam game.

I know there have been updates to Steam, Origin and Windows 10 since I last played ME3, so any one of these could have been what stopped it working.

Does anybody know of any other steps that might fix this problem? Or at least a workaround that would allow me to take screenshots (since print screen doesn't work with ME3, even in borderless window) and upload them to Steam?

Origin is definitely the culprit here after extensive testing. I've tried everything on the steam forums and others and nothing works. Non-Steam games that do not use Origin can access the Steam overlay, but any games I try to use that require Origin absolutely will not work with the overlay. The game launches and your friends can see what game you're playing, but the Steam Overlay is not activated. Someone went out of their way to do this to us. Thanks EA, bunch of tools. Whoever can fix this absurd fiasco will win 1 million internets!

Well, thankfully I have found a workaround that will at least allow me to take screenshots and upload them to Steam: I use FRAPS to take the screenshot, then copy it into the Steam screenshot folder for ME3 and rename it according to Steam's convention. Then when I restart Steam the screenshot appears in the uploader and I can share it.

The only issue with this method seems to be that Steam doesn't recognise the file's metadata properly. It thinks the screenshot was taken at the same date/time as my first ME3 screenshot...

@Ghosthands:
workaround for that: do just a new screenshot in ME3 and then exchange this file with the fraps one and you got the actual date.

@A-Jey: That wouldn't work, since I can't take screenshots in ME3 using Steam (that was part of the original problem).

Thankfully, though, Steam has started recognising the proper date, so my workaround does work!

OK, understand. I thought you wanted to add additional Screenshots.

I give up. This is why people eventually move to consoles. Something that has worked for months becomes broken, just because. No Steam Overlay means no Screenshots and no Steam Controller.

Edit:

THESE INSTRUCTIONS WORK GREAT WITH WINDOWS 7 BUT DON'T SEEM TO WORK RELIABLY WITH WINDOWS 10 (e.g. Mass Effect overlay doesn't work but PvZ does for me).

This method works well with Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. I have not tried it with any other Origin games.

Adding Origin games to steam with overlay (originally posted in now-defunct californiacs.net forums):

1. Add game’s executable to Steam as a non-Steam game (normal process)

2. Under the game’s properties window, the “Target” field doesn’t have to be changed, ex:
"D:\Origin Games\Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare\PVZ.Main_Win64_Retail.exe"

3. Under “Start In”, follow this example:
"D:\Origin Games\Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare\" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Origin.exe"
Make sure that the path between the first pair of quote marks points to the folder where the game's executable file is located. Sometimes they are within a "bin" folder inside the game's main folder.

4. Add a custom banner in grid view if desired

5. In the Origin client, go to “Application Settings” and do the following:
Under “General”, unckeck “Automatically launch Origin when I log on to Win”
Under “Origin In Game”, uncheck “Enable Origin In Game” to disable Origin overlay (optional)
Under “Advanced”, check “Automatically exit Origin after closing game”

After I originally posted these instructions, I added Mass Effect to my Steam library and it worked great. It seems others have gotten several other games to work, so scan the rest of these posts to see if you game is supported.

If you try this with other Origin games and it works, please report here to benefit others.

Regards.

Thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately, with Windows 10 it is hit and miss whether it will work correctly for a particular game.

I tried this and this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/1lst5b/how_to_add_origin_required_games_such_as/ method on Dead Space 3 and neither works. The overlay just doesnt come up
[RnA] Heratiki 2016 年 6 月 27 日 下午 3:14
I'll install Dead Space 3 soon and see if I can come up with a reliable way to get it working on Windows 10. If I do I'll report back here.

Well it's good to know I'm not alone in this!
I tried this method and it just isn't working... I also tried:
- Turn the PC off and on
- Turn the In-Game from Origin on and off
- Added Origin shortcut instead of the game
- Ran the game in admin mode
- Ran the game without admin mode
- Added the Origin.exe into the filepath
- Ran Steam as admin
- Updated my Display drivers
- Turning VSync on and off
- Playing the game windowed and fullscreen

This is frustrating and just another reason I absolutely HATE Origin. You are forced to use Origin to play the games you love and then they just constantly take away features to make Origin as exclusive as they can....

I really hope someone can help me as steam overlay is stupidly important for me.
Fenrir W. Vance 2016 年 8 月 8 日 上午 6:14
Is this affecting all the games you're trying to play with the overlay or is it a specific one you are constantly testing? For me, it's always a hit and miss with games that support the overlay and those that don't. For example, The Sims 4 works with the overlay just fine, NfS Hot Pursuit (the newer one) doesn't. Maybe providing some game names would help.

It's hit or miss. For me I've been able to get games like Titanfall working fairly well but none of the Battlefields play nice.

Just shift-delete win32.exe folder. Problem solved.
