Bioshock Infinite Install From Disk Issue
Ok, so I have a pretty poor internet connection at the moment, rather slow and limited to a max download limit. With this in mind I decided to buy Bioshock Infinite from a store and install from Disk. Unfortunately as many people who have done the same have come to realize is that after installing from disk 1, steam takes over and makes you download the rest of the game (14gig).

Well frustrated doesn't really cover it but, after searching the web there have been a few posts by people able to work around this very silly issue, and I decided to write them here for anyone else in the same boat.

Step 1: Put in disk 1 and then start the installation using this guide https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382

(Note : You will need internet access when you start installation for activating, etc. I waited until the progress bar for the actual installation was showing before dropping my laptop off the internet again).

It will take a while to install the first disk so go get yourself a nice hot beverage.

Step 2: Once installation has completed for disk 1, it will pop up a prompt saying "Insert disk 2". Pop disk 2 in and hit Ok. Steam will immediately say that the installation has completed and that you can run it from your game list etc.. blah blah. Wrong! You still have 14gig worth of download to go so don't put your internets back on yet.

Step 3: What you want to do now is make sure that steam isnt trying to download the rest of the game, if it is make sure to pause the download.

Step 4: Now that steam isnt trying to download tons of content, pop your internet back online.

Step 5: Go back into Steam and go to the menu at the top. Select Steam->Backup and Restore Games.... Now select "Restore a previous backup" and click next. It wont show any backups for Bioshock Infinite, but thats ok, click the Browse button and select the drive that has disk 2 in and hit Next.

Step 6: Now it will show you the installation screen you saw at the start of disk 1. Just click next until the installation begins. It should ask you for disk 1. Pop disk 1 in and it should start installation.

(Note: If at this point you are offline and says you need internet access, clicking continue install might just sit there doing nothing. I had to kill steam from the process manager as cancelling installation will remove all the installation you had already done from disk 1.)

It should immediately ask you for disk 2, as disk 1 has already been installed. Pop in disk 2 and it should start installation from disk 2. (although in the installer it still showed as disk 0 for me lol)

Step 6: Once disk 2 has installed, it will ask for disk 3. At this point I was kind of worried I would have to do the same thing again but I popped in disk 3 and away it went and installed.

So now you should have Bioshock Infinite installed and you can play, just like I am about to do :)

Hi..
I have the same issues with my net connection, I followed your guidelines to the tee.
I succeeded till Step 5, did the restore thing and ran into the following error...
Instead of installing from disk 2, steam performs either of the 2 actions-
1. It doesn't do anything (Installation is stuck at 10166/17348 MB, and the timer is working forwards rather than backwards) OR
2. it does the same thing it did with disk 1. (Game is ready to play blah blah..)

I tried the following steps:
First off, i paused all downloads so that installation can proceed from the disk. Nothing happened.
Then, I tried to do to the restore thing with disk 3, assuming disk 2 was already installed. Upon doing this, steam sends me back to step 5 (insert disk 1, immediately insert disk 2, shoot yourself in despair.)
what should i do?

Hmm that's strange, have you made sure you have an internet connection at the beginning of each disk installation?

When I switched mine off prematurely it just sat there doing nothing for ever.

Worse than installing Skyrim from disk. I had to do step 5 twice to get disk 2 to start. I left my internet on but left Steam at pause. Steam then went to unpacking status and stayed there it did not download. I watch disk activity on the DVD Burner. Games should just give us the ability to decide how we want to install by disk or download and just do what we want. We should not have to jump through hoops to install games from disk. I have a very speedy internet connection but do not want to download a game I bought as a disk.
