Steam client won't open and just keeps repeating update.
I've had this problem for about 2 1/2 weeks now so bear with me.

I can't get my steam client to open. After 2 full uninstalls and re-installs now it keeps getting to the same point. After a fresh install It will open, update the steam platform (This download is roughly 97k kilobytes) It finishes that download no problem and then closes steam which is normal after it updates or anything like that. Well at least that's normal on my computer. I then open up steam again, it tries to do another update (This one being 4,966 kilobytes.) it downloads it fine, and then steam closes again. This is the point I am stuck at. Every time I open it now, all it does is that same update/download to the steam client and then closes. This is the problem I am having. I have no idea what caused this to start happening either. I just tried to open it one day and it wouldn't work.

I'm no computer expert but I have tried what I can to fix it and nothing works. Besides the 2 full re-installations I have tried deleting everything but the steam.exe file and steam apps folder and then opening, repairing in the steam install client window, opening as administrator, stuff like that.

I have been emailing steam support for these past 2 weeks but they have been NO help. So any help I can get on here would be appreciated.

Hi everyone, im sorry if this has been posted before, it wont let me create a new topic says I have posted too much, I haven't made a single post on these forums ever, but I don't know where else to turn, When I Try to go into my steam account, steam guard pops up, I don't ever remember enabling this feature, the problem is my account was registered practically when steam came out, its been years and that email no longer exists, however it had been so old I was able to register the exact name of the email again, still this steam guard verification code still does not arrive, I am completely locked out of my account, I can provide debit card, cd keys, anything. I filed a ticket with support and ive waited 3 days with out a response, I just recently purchased a game and cant even play. Im going nuts here trying to figure this out. I had to create this account just to post this in the forums, can someone please help me here. This steam guard is so efficient it locks even me out of my own account.

It is wanting you to retrieve the code from the email it sends you. Check your SPAM folder.

Try this: Go to the Steam folder, find Steam.exe, right click it and check the box that says Run as administrator. Start Steam, when it is completely loaded up, go to file, exit. Let it shutdown all the way, properly. Now reboot...

thanks man, will do
Same. I have Year 11 school crap to do and need something at the end of the tunnel to keep motivated :( probably going to crash and burn because of this, THANKS VALVE!!
(Yeah I know I should take responsibility for motivating myself, but what's the point of non-stop work for weeks without fun?)
************ FIX ***************

I think I have found a fix - however temporary it might be. It gets Steam running again and I now have Steam interface up.

This is the fix - remove Microsoft Security Essentials entirely.

Do this by going

Run > Appwiz.cpl > Remove Microsoft Security Essentials.

Remove the whole program and do a registry clean if you can (Use CCleaner or similar)

Now de-activate Windows Firewall completely - I downloaded a trial of TrendMicro in the mean time, and de-activated their firewall for 30 minutes as well.

This allowed Steam to download the 4966KB update and SEVERAL UPDATES AFTERWARDS (about 15). All of these updates were different sizes but EVENTUALLY it extracted the package and came up with the login screen.

I have no guarantee this will work for everyone - but give it a go.
Same problem. Please help steam
LEGIT FIX!!
Get a friend to give you their steam folder (leave out SteamApps if you want),
Delete your Steam folder completely (If it won't allow you, find the steam client bootstrapper in task manager, under processes)
Put the friend's steam folder in program files
Run steam, it'll install a first time update and log into your friend's account
Go to the steam button (top left corner) and hit "Change user"
Enter your details & log in
Reinstall whatever games you want and enjoy playing!

Don't know if this'll work for everyone, but It doesn't seem like a dependent thing, so it should.
Let me know if it works
So happy to have Steam Back! :D
SammerGuy,

It worked for me! You are a genius!
I didn't had to reinstall any games, just don't delete the folder 'steamapps'.
And be sure that your friend doesn't have the same update problem.

Thanx Sammerguy!
