Mass Effect 1 won't start.

I just recieved the first ME because I am forever behind in the times, and installed it tonight- but when ever I try to run it via Steam or just the desktop icon, it crashes before it starts.
Literally, as soon as I click to run, I get the "Mass Effect has stopped working" message.

My drivers are up to date and I have no problem running my other games.
Anyone able to help?

Only thing I can suggest is verify the game, maybe it didn't install correctly.

I have verrified the game, and re-installed it to no avail.
I suppose I'll contact support in the morning.

You'd probably have to contact EA since it's their game. Assuming it never worked for you before and all your other games are working, it will surely be a fault with the game. Do you use anything like Eyefinity, 3Dvision or any other odd configurations that might throw it off?

I am having this same problem. I'm guessing that you were able to resolve it from looking at your profile and seeing that you've been playing Mass Effect. What did you do to fix this?

I am having this same problem. I'm guessing that you were able to resolve it from looking at your profile and seeing that you've been playing Mass Effect. What did you do to fix this?

I went and found the runme.exe and ran it directly from there.
It should be in Steam>Steamapps>common>Mass Effect.
It seemed that it was not connected to the shortcut or launcher, or something. I just made a shortcut to it onto my desktop, and haven't had an issue since.

this actually worked to get the launcher up but the game didnt load past the launcher screen... WTF!!!???

Try setting Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect\Binaries\Mass Effect to win xp compatability mode. Maybe run it as admin if that doesn't work. It seems some launch from the regular file and some from the binaries file.

How do i do that? Because i'm having the same problem as TheEroica and it won't go further than the launch screen

[Was about to post that then suddenly after an n°999 re-install and n°999 re "Verify game cash" ME1 finally runs... got absolutly NO clue to what does the trick : / ]

Mass Effect 1 won't start for me either.... !

I bought the game via steam way back and already make two successfull runs of the game.
But I've been trying to play for a week but ME1 won't start. (Windows message saying ME cease to run even if it not lauch)

1- I've tryed lauching from the file Steam>Steamapps>common>Mass Effect but... FAILED to launch
2- I've tryed the patch 1.02 but still... FAIL to launch

3- I erased the game then re-download it... FAIL to launch

4- Re- erased then re-install it via and old save (late 2011) ... FAIL to launch

5- Install "Bring down the Sky" at some point in this process... FAIL to lauch

I'll be VERY happy to get some help !

As I said Something along the way DID work but I don't know what !
If you got and old save of ME1 and you are in this situation, I feel for you !

I spent so much time in this game that not being able to lauch it and find all my saved character was **** annoying to say the least !

I don't know if anyone is still having this issue but, I just installed the game, and couldn't run it.

Executing this Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect\Binaries\Mass Effect with win xp compatibility on solved it.
