Unable to play any Steam games in fullscreen mode
I have a Dell XPS Laptop and I am unable to play any games bought off of steam in fullscreen mode. If I try to play a game in fullscreen, it will usually run past the beginning credits and crash back to desktop when I reach the game menu.

I can play games without this issue if I play in windowed mode or if I connect a second monitor to my laptop.

This happens with any game I've downloaded from Steam. (Bio Shock, Bio Shock 2, Call of Duty MW3, MW3 Multiplayer, Gotham Imposters) but this issue does not happen if I am playing a game I didn't download with Steam. (Like a game from Origin)

I checked my gpu drivers this morning and everything is current.

My laptop Specs:
Dell XPS 17 L702X
Win 7 Pro 64Bit
Intel(R) Core i7 2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz
8G RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M + Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000

Disable the Intel IGP in the bios, It tricks the game into thinking that the HD 3000 is the main display adapter, and once any load is applied it will try to switch the GPU to the dedicated. But, since the game already loaded the primary GPU it crashes.

Let me know if that helps. It was very common over the last few years.

Apparently Dell doesn't want to allow you to disable the IGP in BIOS.. They want you to handle that through NVIDIA Control Panel/Optimus.

All my options in NVIDIA Control Panel look correct though.

This is a solution from Steam:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

This is a common problem with games running on systems with multiple monitors.

To fix this, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\***THIS GAME'S FOLDER***\Bin\ folder.

Right click on the .exe file and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab and put a check in the Disable Desktop Composition box.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.
