How do you quickswitch items in tf2?

Yeh. Stupid question. I tried doing the "Old Technuiqe" and turns out valve fized that bug. My friend told me that there was this command called bind / "quickswitch". Can someone explain further?

scroll wheel to change weapons.

Go into the advanced options and there should be a tickable box labelled quick switch.

then press Q to quickswitch

Like Vitdom said, go to Advanced Options and one of the very first choices is for you to do quick switch. It works with the mouse wheel too.

I have not played a game that uses q for a long time but from the op what is he talking about that got disabled if q still works?

Q is usually "lastinv" and just switches between the last 2 weapons used.
