Long live tower defense?

IDK, I played Plants Vs. Zombies to 100%... I tried Dungeon Defenders and it made me want to cry, it was the most boring thing I've ever played.

Overall most tower defense games seem like half assed versions of either an RPG, RTS, or in rare cases first person shooters. As in, stats are thoroughly fleshed out and arranged but some aspect of the abstract spatial strategy of other games is completely absent. What do I mean? I mean tower defense removes the abstract aspect of other genres and replaces them with a bone dry numbers game that just seems extremely shallow to me.

I don't get it, what is the appeal?

Dungeon Defenders is really not a good example of tower defence as a "pure" genre, because that's not what it's intended to be. Rather, it's a hybrid game where you also control a character and grind levels. That's ARPG stuff, not TD. Same with something like Sanctum - it's not a pure TD game, so you're only complaining about TD as much as you're complaining about FPSs or whatever.

If you want a straight TD game of excellent quality, try Defense Grid. It doesn't try anything fancy, just polishes the hell out of what it does.

Aye, Defense grid is a great example of Defense Grid. Orcs Must Die is great too, though very different from classic TD.

Have you tried ReKillers? It's on Google play.. its a neat twist on tower defense that requires more strategy. It's not the same ol bone dry td.
