steam input scroll wheel

i'm in a game that currently has no controller support, setting up my xbox controller.

i set the left joystick to mouse movement and set A,B to left and right mouse clicks.

this is working perfectly, but there are places where i need to use the scroll wheel.

how do i set this up in the steam input?


i tried changing the right stick to "scroll wheel" and nothing hapoens, it's completely unresponsive.

i can change right stick to d-pad movement and then scroll up and scroll down to the up and down, but then it only scrolls a tiny bit and i have to keep tapping it manually and that's no good.

I don't understand the scroll wheel settings.
it shows
clockwise command
counterclockwise command

and i can set scroll wheel up and down to those and they sort of work, but i have to keep doing the circular motion and again it only moves a tiny bit.

and then i see
scroll wheel list 1 command

3
4
down to 10

and no idea what these do.

all i want to do is have the right stick act like the scroll wheel and scroll up when i move up and scroll down when i move it down.



edit : actually, i sort of found a solution. I change right stick to D-pad and then set the scroll up and down to up and down and the clicked the gear icon, and then settings and turned on "turbofire" and set the repeat rate down to 10 and it pretty much does what i'm wanting. . .

but i still don't understand the "scroll wheel" setting, changing the joystick to scroll wheel, if there's any imsight into this, it would be helpful

I'm currently looking to replace controller companion with steam input so I can use my Xbox controller to control my desktop and I'm having the exact same troubles as you were. I mean, counter clockwise? Clockwise? Scroll wheel list command?

I just wanna use the right analog as a scroll wheel. Up scrolls up, down scrolls down. It should be simple, but none of this makes sense.

yeah, i don't think i ever figured it out completely, except it may have been related to that specific game i was playing, because i tried the clockwise thing in another game and it worked, but was still awkward.

I prefer my "sorta" solution.

still, i'm impressed that this even works with an xbox controller. used to be only for steam controller. i had the steam controller and the lack of a right stick annoyed me, but also my steam controller broke after only 2 months and i don't know why, but i digressed.

I didn't think you could use steam input outside of a game, to control the desktop?

Yeah! you absolutely can. My PC is hooked up to both a monitor and a 60" TV, that way you can either use it for couch gaming or have the regular desktop experience... And this is where steam input works wonders: when couch gaming, your m&k are aaaaaaaaaall the way over there... So it's really useful to be able to control the desktop solely with your joystick. Also, thanks to Steam (and not thanks to Sony, who never released a proper pc utility), the ps4/ps5 controller and its touchpad now works wonders.

So yeah! It's fantastic.

Actually the whole concept of the steam input is fantastic... It alone has been changing the landscape of pc gaming from somethink necessarily-tinkerable, exclusive for the tech savvy, to something plug-and-play most consolists would also enjoy.

But this specific thing regarding the scroll wheel is nuts and *****makes no sense*****, I wasted hours yesterday on this and couldn't get it to work.

Another cool option after setting the right analog as D-Pad to scroll up and down for me
was setting Left and Right with "Mouse Cursor -> Move To Position", I have 2 monitors and using this I can switch between them with a flick of the right analog while keeping my low sens cursor on the left analog

Just figured out the scroll wheel setting after a while of searching.

If you want a trackpad on the steam deck to behave as a mouse scroll wheel, you need to change the "clockwise command" to "scroll wheel down" and the "counter clockwise command" to "scroll wheel up"

If it's behaving a bit strangely, make sure you have "wrap list" turned on in the trackpad behaviour settings. You may also want to change the swipe direction to vertical if you don't like the radial/circular infinite scrolling.

you can map it with autohotkey. my autohotkey file is somethgingf like this:

so im nulling out left windows key to do nothing, alt escape, ctrl escape, you can very easily if windows recognizes the input command map your mouse scrooll wheel, click, scroll up or down, to whatever u want, not sure what AHK commands are for XINPUT's though, there is another program called xmouse as well which can disable that button or the side buttons, as well as sharpkeys but thats mostly keyboards
