Steam downloads kill my internet

So this issue seems common and I found a few old posts with the same issue but I still haven't a solution. This problem only happens on my main PC. Steam Deck is fine and my older PC is fine. Whenever I download something on steam on my main PC my internet dies. Can someone please help?

No it's not just my PC. Internet goes down on my router and I have to reboot it to get it working again.

When i had that problem it was because of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ router that could not handle the speed and crashed and so i had to limit the download speed in the steam settings and then it worked.

Sadly, the problem is your router. Steam opens a ton of parallel connections which may overwhelm bad network appliances. Actually, that may overload any nettwork appliance, it's just that non-♥♥♥♥♥♥ ones don't drop connectivity entirely, merely refusing new connections.

Your router is of the kind that, when overwhelmed, just quits. Follow Starfishy's lead, that should help.

Do check for bad packets and check with other cable or check firmware update to router, same goes with netcard driver.

Worst case is as the other also point out router or switch is the cause if you have more gear at own network.

I understand the issue might be related to my router but the thing is it only happens on one of my PCs. I can download games on Steam just fine on my other PC and the same goes for my Steam deck where I can download with no issues. I was thinking it might be an issue related my current PC's network card. Thank you all for the replies.

Steam downloads are HTTPS based. They don’t do anything fancy beyond making parallel web requests for downloads. They can’t “kill”’your internet unless your router can’t handle parallelized HTTPS requests

Sounds more like you have a corrupted networking stack on that PC or some anti virus program that’s injecting something
