Why is the Linux Store page full of games that do not work in Linux?
Hello,

It looks like the OS filter in the Steam Store is just broken for me. The steam filters shows me that more games are available for Linux then are available for Windows, which just makes no sense. If I open the Steam Store page for Linux supported games, it is full of Windows only games (Missing the SteamOS symbol). What is happening here?

I'm browsing using my gaming windows PC, but I am looking for games to run on my linux based media center (connected to the TV in the living room). I'm not browsing on the media center because it is very cumbersome to browse on it. Browsing games on my gaming PC is a lot easier and faster. Why does that not work?

I have tried some "Linux Supported through Proton" games (which I guess is why they are included in the page), but none of them work. Only real native linux games work, and only the simpler ones of them work (the media center is very weak). Why can I not filter for them?

Thank you for any helpful answers.

Not a direct answer but just advise: if the mediacenter is weak I'd advise using the Steam client on the mediacenter only to stream games from your gaming PC, not to run games locally. Steam -> Settings -> Remote Play to set it up.

Yeah, I also thought of that. But I want to play with a controller (Wireless X-Box 360 controller) and it looks like the inputs do not get transferred to the gaming PC properly. The controller works perfectly in local games, in the Big-Picture-Mode and to control the streaming (abort it, changing controls, ...) but as soon as the streaming starts the controller stops working. I've also tried activating / deactivating Steam Input-Mapping (or whatever the name of that feature was) but it did not have any effect. The controller works perfectly when I use it on the gaming PC itself, but not when streaming.

If you also have a (wired or wireless) Xbox 360 controller connected to the Windows PC itself -- that used to be a known bug, although it should've been fixed, and although this in my case involved an actual physical Steam Link. Maybe it returned (note; if you are going to test, be sure to restart Steam on both ends after unplugging the controller on the gaming PC).

Anyways. I'll otherwise butt out; no specific answer to your actual query...

No, I only have one USB-Receiver for the wireless controller. It can only be plugged in one computer at a time, so that's not it. But thank you for your answers anyway. :-)

A huge lot of Windows games run on Linux using Proton

Not on my media center, apparently. Why can't I get a list of native games?

Yet, a much huger lot still doesn't on the unimpressive supposedly IGP graphbics on that mediacenter.

Mocking your poor choice of OS for gaming.

The narrow by os filter for linux is working fine for me in the top seller section. What part of the store are you browsing?

Nah. Valve sells a dedicated gaming device that runs on their own dedicated Linux distribution.

I'm a dedicated Linux user; trust me on this. On general Linux and general PC hardware it is all still the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as with Linux in any consumer context. I.e., Proton-foundational DXVK not working at all or bombing out on whatever obsolete Radeon or Intel-integrated or (...) hardware or X.org or MESA-version or (...) on whichever random collection of obsolete junk Debian calls "stable" or Canonical slapped an "LTS" label on or that Arch Linux auto-imported from the developer's latest and greatest bugs or (...)

If you want to ♥♥♥♥ about with Linux, use Linux. If you want to play a game, use a dedicated gaming system using Windows as a dedicated game-launcher.

Or an Xbox 360...

... that's not what the OP is about. The OP is about games not working on Linux, not about games not working on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ GPUs.

The OP is about the store search not differentiating between SteamOS and general/native Linux. As far as I can see there's indeed no way to make it do that.

You then said "A huge lot of Windows games run on Linux using Proton" to which I added that that is not in fact really the case on general/crummy hardware with general/crummy Linux drivers/support on general/crummy Linux systems. I.e., outside of the context of the Steam Deck and SteamOS, i.e., such as in the context of the general mediacenter PC which OP explicitly specified to be particularly crummy.

I hope that helps clear up the evolution of the conversation...

Hardware != OS. I am specifically talking about games (not) running on crummy OS (although I don't consider Linux crummy), not about games not running on crummy hardware. I get it, you want to intermix those topics. I don't. Leave me alone.
