A shortcut is the launcher for the game when you add the non Steam game use the shortcut. I created a category named it Non Steam Games and using the add a non Steam selected that category

i don't understand what you are saying

let me clarify my problem:

when i use the "add a non-steam game" button; and select the shortcut for the game; steam will instead select the original exe

i wanted to know if there's a way around this since i can't change the icon for the original exe
Is this for big picture mode?

Or mods?

1. Add the game's .exe to Steam (add via steam itself).
2. Right-click the game in Steam -> Properties.
3. Look at the Target field. Steam will have the path to the .exe there.
4. a Manually delete that path and paste the full path to your Windows Shortcut (.lnk) instead.
Example: "C:\Users\Name\Desktop\Game Shortcut.lnk"
4. b Do the same for the "Start In" field, pointing it to the folder where the shortcut (or game) resides.

for steam itself, you can edit the icon straight from game properties in steam.
