<SOLVED> Steam Error Code -104, now won't launch at all
Hey so I was continuously getting this error code -104 saying that "Steam was unable to connect to the internet." I tried disabling all my firewalls, Steam was already allowed through, though. I tried uninstalling steam, I tried deleted clientregistry.blob, tried deleting everything bu the steam.exe and apps folder, tried on different networks all the same things happen. Yes, I can connect to the internet through a browser (any of the ones I have, Firefox, Opera, IE) but can't get steam to even launch anymore, it just says: "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the internet.

Anybody have this issue before? Thank you in advance for any help/advice given.

Hey Fred,

I'm on that page but it just looks like it's loading forever, as it keeps saying:

Loading, please wait...

Testing TCP Port:

Testing UDP Port:

And won't ever do anything. I thought maybe I needed to install java but I have java 6 or whatever installed, but when I try to install the latest, the installer won't work either it says it can't connect to something. Will it not work unless I have the latest version of Java, or something?

Also thank you for our help

Okay so I did a flushconfig with steam, and I got it running again, so it's back to the error code -104. It's weird, because I can't connect to store, community, my profile and I can't install my games but it's still telling me which of my friends are online and stuff, so the friends feature is working fine. Installed Java to where FireBind won't give me the "your browser doesn't have java" error, but it's still stuck at loading. Don't really know where to go from here.

I cannot look at the store, or community. i just get the error. i reinstalled steam and can't find the issue. please help

Sorry for taking so long, been real busy.

Uninstalled anything I saw with the name java from my control panel uninstall thing, then used offline installer of java for the latest version, still nothing happening with firebind.

Something weird is going on, now-- my other browsers won't work, at least on the current network I'm on. Can't use Opera, Chrome, or IE, only Firefox works. This is weird.

I'm thinking that it IS something to do with the ports (how, I don't know why) but how would I change the ports allowed through the router? It's not my router so I wouldn't even be able to do anything, I don't think, right? Do I need to mess with my firewall settings or something else on my computer?

Again, thanks for your help, Fred.

If I do I don't know how to see if something is messed up or whether something has been changed. I changed the IPv4 DNS settings to the following:
Preferred: 8.8.8.8
Alternate: 8.8.4.4
Still same issues with Steam. Like I said, I can't mess wit the router where I'm at and this is a problem I've been having on ANY network I've been on for about two weeks.

If there is anything I can do to mess with stuff on my computer that's fine, again, just can't do anything with routers until I get my own internet.

Okay added you, thanks so much for offering that, man I appreciate it. Just let me know when is a good time for you to do it, my time is PST, I'm in Washington state.

Okay, so the reason this post is solved is because of the following:
I was able to fix the error. It turns out my network card was not ocnfigured correctly. I have a killer network card and it was just being all kinds of funky so I ran its software and it asked to reconfigure is settings. After running this everything was COMPLETELY fine.

I would like to thank Fred for sticking with me and this issue til the end. I really appreciate the help. I am off to play my new games. See ya!
