How do I download a game while playing a game?

My procedure is as follows

1. Start up the game you want to play.
2. Alt+Tab out of the game and bring up Steam.*
3. Start the download.
4. Go back to the game and enjoy.

* In my experience some games don't work with Alt+Tab so use windowed mode if available.

This is probably true but I will say I have never had any problems playing games while downloading.

It depends on the game + if it is using the Internet when you download while playing. I don't normally enounter any problems, if I do I just play offline.

Yup, you can I do it all the time. Usually when you're downloading something and you start up a game, it would say "download suspended," but just right click the game and pause the download, then press resume downloading.

You can't pause since they updated the downloading though, now the button's called manage downloads
