Steam Not Utilizing Full Network?
Hello all, I've been having some trouble downloading games with my network not reaching the speeds it should. I have 1000 Mb up and down and it downloads way slower. It will reach peaks of 114MB which is the correct speed but it will also stay allow for a majority of the time. Here is a image of what I'm experiencing https://imgur.com/a/Q7TYLRw
I made sure my server is on the closest, no limit of bandwidth, changed DNS settings, restarted modem and router but no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have you read the other post there been made with this.

This is know as depend on what you did at that server, cache issue or write behind issue with it.

This is seen even in the past then disk cant keep up or get ride of the data fast enough.
you are up againest old was and even if disk is fars enough to write it.
and netwrok do it diffrently, if you cant recive data as it come in , then itsa you that send ICMP back to server, to reducve or stop sending, its made this way whats the point in flooding you.
then you dont write it

ps.
you can find 100 if not 1000 of post with this,
there are some user that has 10g network and raid , and they dont have a problem with DL, dome has even 50g or more, they have not could caught steam in not keeping up

sure this is not the cae with many of us only have 1GB, im just saying it so you know it.

and this dont explan if from ISP into steam DL server can deliver the DL. most ISP only promish into own ISP not rest of the world.

its here speedtest fail or should i said dont explan better to other server.

some even mention some SSD dont live up to what other seem as should.

as always ask steam support.
what if they have a configuration issue, problem is to proof or be lucky enough if this is the case, techniocal you should have been on a faster server then them with 100mb network conngetions, to even suggest such is possible is way off. point is what if this is the case.

Yes I have, I can't really find any good posts with helpful info. I found one that told me to change my DNS settings and it helped for a few seconds and then reverted back. So I really don't know. When I search on steam discussion it likes to show any post with the words I searched so it doesn't really help.

its a complicate issue you have, snd yes you need to know alot about it.
worst case 2 or more in top of each other , bad packet to other worst possibility , then it very hard to know or ID , much simple if this is only one button fix.

get help with other tech person, show him this, i dont care if he think he know better, then try it. this actual require hands on to know all the traps if disk is in 100% or other app or user use same disk. even windows backup or defrateming can cause issue with disk.

and we are back at yes you need to be very skilled to know all here and the sidetraps most dont say here.

I see, well not sure what to do, I used the command prompt to see the read speed of my C Drive and it was 257 MB so I'm confident it isn't a hardware issue at least.

well do the spare pc or friends laptop test, try see it as ruleout is it my pc or into steam and isp issue, see it part of the faulty finding, ( understand this i dont care if this is your pc or ISP or steam in other end, i just look at it from network point of view and who is the cause.

this is why i explan it. i go for tha ball or cause, not you or isp or steam. ( and one of you is the cause. ) and why test with other unit, can be a very good idea to narrow it down to who is doing this.

Speedtest and other sites show up and download in MegaBIT while Steam Downloads are shown in MegaBYTE.
8 Bit are 1 Byte.

A 1000 MegaBIT download speed translates to about max 120 MegaBYTE download speed on Steam which seems to be in line with what you are getting.

Valve made the default bits per second (or the setting turned on in a recent beta update, May 4th.

Just for future reference.

Good to know, thx.
The OP posted a screenshot and they have it set to MB so its still relevant for this specific problem of theirs. :P

It took nearly 20 years to make it the default.

If you see the screenshot I posted it shows 0 MB/s with random spikes that go to around 40MB, it should be at 100MB/s more consistently than show and that is the problem I am having.

Steam downloads compressed chunks. Once a chunk is down it gets decompressed and installed. If your CPU and/or drive is too busy doing this Download speeds get slowed and may even stop.

Open Task Manager and look at the Usage % for your CPU and Drive. If they are near or at 100% thats your issue

Ahh that is def it then, is there any way I can deal with this or just have to live with it?

If it's a Hard Disk Drive,HDD, thats hitting 100% you could Defrag it to see if that helps. Won't be amazing but could speed things up, just a little. Better option to just buy a SSD

No SSD should really have issues at those speeds so it's possible it's failing.

If it's not the drive but the CPU then upgrading the CPU would help, though that costs more than simply buying a new drive

It is my SSD unfortunately, I seem to have a bad GPU that I'm trying to RMA atm but not sure if that would cause it, that really sucks tho, also happens with my HDDs
Supafly 13. maj 2023 kl. 1:15
GPU won't affect your DL rates. Could try running CrystalDiskMark to see what speeds it gets and compare that to speeds it should be getting.
