Controller setup hangs at "preparing to test input", controller unusable
I've been using a USB fightstick with Steam with no issues for months, rebinding it to keyboard.
Yesterday I found that it no longer worked, the game-specific Steam "controller settings" menu tells me there is no controller connected.
So I closed the game and went to the "controller settings" in the general Steam menu, where I saw my "generic USB joystick", clicked on "begin setup", bound all the buttons to keyboard (with all the buttons being properly detected when I pressed them), finally the setup hangs at the "preparing to test input" phase and the controller remain unusable - at least through Steam, I can use it with no problems through Joy2key or Autohotkey or anything else.

Any ideas? Is there maybe any way to directly configure the stick by editing some text file, skipping the setup?

I have three PC's with arcade sticks and none of them are working anymore in Steam. They do the same as the above post. If I switch to"Beta Update" it fixes it, but when I reboot, the controls are not working again. If I switch back the update to the non beta they work again...until I reboot. This all happened after the latest update. Where can we report this?

I am having the exact same issue with my sim racing wheel, all controller bindings worked yesterday, but today nothing.

Switching to Steam Beta worked, for now

Encountered this problem today. I will try to switch to Beta, but have to add that before I had problem with saving controller settings. Each gaming session I had to run controller setup.
[edit]
Beta fixed both problems.

It works if you switch to beta, but as soon as I reboot, the problem comes back.

Still like a steam wide problem. I have a controls that worked fine on my pinball cabinet but now having the same problem you're describing since the update.

Glad to find out it's not just me! I finally got an arcade cabinet built with generic joysticks using "enable steam input" and they quit working after this last update. Changing back and forth from beta to no beta is only fix each reboot.

Same here! My arcade machines and pinball machine all require me to switch back and forth. Hope they fix this soon!

Just adding to this list. I'm also having the same issue. Please, devs, fix this.

Add me as someone who's glad to know it isn't just me.

Now every time I restart I have to switch to the Beta if I'm not in, or back to no Beta if I am in, for my Sim Wheel buttons to work as a generic controller. Is there a good place to report this issue to steam?
