Steam link on linux

Hello folks! Would anyone be willing to help me get steam link working?

I have several linux boxes. One of them (my desktop) works fine. The others (in particular a laptop) do not work; Steam successfully launches big picture mode on the laptop, but it is in ever reflect on the link app.

So, details so you can see if I am worthy of helping:
The steam link app is installed on a nvidia shield tv (https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/shield/shield-tv/)
The computer that works is ubuntu 22.04 with a nvidia 3080 driving a duel monitor setup (a 34" acer ultrawide at 3440x1440 as the secondary monitor, and a dell 27" 4k at 3840x2160 in portrait mode.
The computer that does not work is a dell precision 5530 with a NVidia Quadro P1000 Mobile driving a 4k laptop display at 3840x2160. Also running ubuntu 22.04.
The shield is driving a westinghouse (no idea what model) running in 1080p at 59.940 hz (the default?) running at 1920x1080. On this attempt, unlike my last attempt, it is crashing steam. Steam immediately relaunches, but the link fails. Same result if I set the laptop display to 1920x1080.

Anyone had any luck getting this work before?

Also, yes I'm using nvidia proprietary drives, relatively up to date. The laptop has the 510 driver.

Since my question is more about steam link than linux, I don't think that applies.

So, after disabling the hardware acceleration, it would not crash steam. The client device (the nvidia shield tv) would display only a black screen, and then host device (the laptop) would display the steam interface and allow it to be navigated.

Didn't work other than that though.

Also, even though the host had "play sound" deselected in the remote play advanced options it was still making all the sounds.
