The Windows 10 agenda?
I now have 3 games that I cannot play because it requires me to upgrade to Windows 10 software. COD Warzone, Fallout 76 and No Man's Sky which is now partially playable due to a recent update ( It has multiplayer disabled for non Win 10 clients)
What the ♥♥♥♥ is going on? Is it normal for things like this to happen or is this simply a big monopoly push for PC gamers to constantly upgrade their setup
(I have Windows 8.1)

I remember, when the first games came out, that would not run in DOS, but require Windows 95.

For many modern games windows 10 has been a requirement and this is very normal for many games and programs over time so you either have to accept this and upgrade to a modern OS or not play those games.

Just to add to it, my main worry is not so much, that my system may not be able to run some of the newer titles anymore (I've bought so much stuff over the years, that I could easily survive on my existing stock for a century), but what really scares me is, that some day, Valve will cut out access for older systems.
They shut down Windows 2000 long ago, they closed the client for XP and Vista... 7, 8 and 8.1 will be the next in line. Maybe five years left, if we are lucky.

Old operating systems have been goi g out of support for decades now. Remember when you had to upgrade to 7 because a specific game wouldn't run on XP? Now 7 is outdated. If you wait long enough, new games will require 11 (or 12 or whatever's current by then).

That's absolutely normal. It's not that different on MacOS or Linux, if some new piece of software uses a new OS feature, it won't run on the old system.

What monopoly though? NMS isn't even programmed by a Microsoft subsidiary nor is CoD! What monopoly are you talking about? Do you really believe there's some secret MS-driven cabal mandating non-MS-owned developers to ♥♥♥♥ customers? Really?

Fun fact: MS' takeover of Activision, the FTC seems not to be too happy about.

F76 still say win8 on store info, they other is win10.

Switch to Linux OP, if you want to avoid Windows 10/11 so badly. Of the games you listed, the only one you still won't be able to play is COD, but that's due to the anti-cheat service and might change in the future for that game anyway.

You'll have a fast, stable, secure, highly customizable and up to date operating system without any of the downsides of Windows that you want to avoid, all for the low cost of nothing. Free as in beer. Free as in freedom.

... except you'll run into the same problem. You can't always run new software on old systems.

True, though right now he's limited in what games he can play and it will only worsen. With Linux he'll be limited in what games he can play and it will only improve. (Barring the limitations of his hardware, of course.)

Not true. With Linux, they'll run into the same problem, namely upgrading or no new games.

Windows 10 was a free upgrade for the majority of users. Things evolving is nothing new and meeting requirements on PC is not some new concept either.

I never understood this mentality about being adverse to change/upgrades.
I switched to Windows 10 on release day, never had a single problem.
Did the same with Windows 11, again, no problems at all so far.
Actually Windows 11 may be my favorite Windows so far regarding functionality.
Windows 7 is 13 years old by now.
There is no real reason to stick to an outdated and unsupported OS.

It's indeed fairly normal that titles that are multiplayer oriented or have certain key multuplayer elements don't support an outdated, unsupported OS. And certainly with newer titles one can expect that they're targeted at the current operating systems.

There always comes a point when you'll start missing out if you stay on an older OS.

You'd be shocked how much FUD people will believe
