Start up issues with Steam
First I do know this has been discussed before but I just am not finding anything that is helpful and I am hoping maybe I missed something obvious.

Came to my computer today to read that there was an update. Said ok and allowed the steam client to update. Went to start steam (because it did not restart by itself) and nothing.

Ok so I have tried the following:

1. Ran the repair tool
2. Re-downloaded the installer and tried to repair that way
3. Deleted clientregistry.blob
4. tried uninstall, but all that did was remove the program from the list of programs, all other items like icons and folder and registry keys were still there.
5. Manually removed steam including registry keys
6. Tried install but got error "error can't initialize plug-ins directory"
7. Downloaded an older version of the installer (this did allow it to install) and allowed it to update.
8. Clicked on icon and on steam.exe in the folder and still same issue
9. Tried running in compatibility mode
10. Tried to run as admin
11. Tried to delete everything except steam.exe
12. Rebooted at least 5 times
13. Updated my .net
14. I am sure I have tried other things, but i have lost track of it all.

So now when I click on the icon or on steam.exe it flashes the windows that says updating and then that goes away and nothing. Have checked and steam.exe is NOT running in processes or services. Nothing has changed on the system in any way since playing yesterday and todays update.

Also, under processes the show all users is checked and there is nothing there. Under services(local) the only item there is steam client service which is set to auto and when i click start on that it says

The steam client service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.

When I double click on steam.exe in services it shows up briefly (steam.exe*32) and disappears and then steamerrorreporter.exe pops into the list for a few seconds and then also goes away.

I would really like to play all the games I own on steam that require them to run but now can't due to some update. Please help me as this is very very frustrating. Thanks in advance.

and it says the following in my debug.log

[1204/233415:ERROR:resource_bundle.cc(417)] Failed to load E:\games\bin\chrome.pak
Some features may not be available.
[1204/233416:FATAL:browser_database_system.cc(40)] Check failed: temp_dir_.CreateUniqueTempDir().

Spyware, Adware, and Viruses Interfering with Steam

Or Completely exit from the Steam client.
Go to C:\Program Files\Steam (or the Steam directory that was specified during installation).
Locate ClientRegistry.blob and rename this file to ClientRegistryOld.blob.
Restart Steam to allow the file to be recreated.
Test the issue once more.
I have exited the steam clients (it actually wont start at all so that is not a problem) and I have renamed the blob file and deleted the blob file. It puts it back but same issue. I am running a full system scan to see if anything turns up. I did a quick scan and nothing but I am doing the full scan now.

I use ad-aware and malwarebytes but malwarebytes doesnt run all the time just when I scan with it. I just scanned today with ad-aware, malwarebytes, and microsoft safety scanner all full scans. It did find some minor items, but even after fixing everything it still does not work.
I'm having the same problem, can't even get steam to start. When I try to run it I noticed an error pops up on the bottom task bar just for a split seconds that says #NOBIGPICTURE, at least that's what I can make of it before it disappears.

When I look at the task manager and try to run steam, steam.exe disappears after a few seconds and steamerrorreporter.exe replaces it.

I've contacted steam support but nothing from them in the last couple days.
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Running Windows XP.
Yes that sounds about right, havent noticed anything in the task bar for me. I too have submitted a ticket and heard nothing yet.
Update:

Well as of right now I am able to access steam once again. Below is what I did, not sure which if any of these steps or if all of these steps finally fixed things.

- booted into safe mode
- uninstalled steam
- ran a registry cleaner
- went to a restore point several days ago
- let it boot normal
- went to steam and downloaded installer
- installed and let update
- logged in like normal

So why did it do this to me in the first place? The world may never know but I do thank any and all that tried to help here, it was much appreciated. And to you Tex I wish you luck. Maybe this will work for you too?
Thanks Thunderpuppy, I'll give that a try today and cross my fingers! Greatly appreciate the info!
I'm able to get to Steam in Safe mode but I still can't run the games. Couldn't restore from a previous date because I had cleaned my hard drive...yikes...looks like my days of running steam may have come to an end.:(
i have a similar issue , cant login anymore , Steam is having trouble connecting to the stream servers.... tried everthing, ports are open, uninstall and reinstall steam, any further idea ?
thxxx
You might try to repair windows install. This was my next step if nothing else worked. Try this site for a good walkthrough to not lose any information or files.

In normal mode steam comes up and vanishes after a few seconds, I can't even get steam to open at all let alone run any game....bummer.
