Age of Empires 2 HD Edition: Failed to start game (Unknown Error)
My problem is that after installing AoE2 I get this error.
I have so far tried everything I could manage to find:
-delete appcache file and computer steam
-update drivers, then restart computer
-uninstalling then reinstalling
-disabling antivirus
-verifying local files
-Running in admin mode and several other tricks that I saw on youtube and such, I can't remember them all, so I can't list them either way they didn't work

My system specs are:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 2.66GHz
RAM 8.00GB
Windows 7 64-bit OS

I am going to continue to try to see if I can figure it out, I was more hopeing that someone could let me know if there was something that I missed or maybe a patch in the furture. This is my first time posting an issue in the couple of years I have used steam so let me know if I was lacking on info. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Well I wish I could say what happend but I restarted for the fourth time and tried playing the game again and it worked. I assume something changed when I restarted it I am just unsure what. Either way my problem is resolved. Guess my first post was rather anti climatic. Have a good day.

I have been having a similar problem.

My system specs are:
Intel i5-3550 CPU 3.30GHz
RAM 8.00GB
Windows 7 64-bit OS

When I first got the game I couldn't even click the game in the library to install it because steam would freeze, I believe running as administrator, deleting appcache, and several restarts fixed this. Then I kept getting random crashes when I would click multiplayer, or try to start a multiplayer game. Then the game started crashing saying that the app was already running if I tried to start it. After all of this I decided to re-install (when it would no longer let me play multiplayer after repeated restarts). Unfortunately now when I try to install it tells me there was an unknown error, so I can't even install.

Nothing so far has fixed this. I contacted steam support when I was first having problems but told them it resolved itself (jumped the gun a bit), now I have contacted them again, but it has been two days so I figured it couldn't hurt to post here too and see if anyone else had this problem and found a solution.

Thanks for reading.

I have the same problem.

I haven't had that issue, to me your specs look fine too. Could you post what the error says exactly?
I am still having a little trouble and I asked a friend of mine and he is also getting this error as well. When I run the game and the launcher shows up I get an error, though it doesn't effect the game and I can still play.
The error says this:

Script Error
An error has occured in the script on this page.
Line: 243
Char: 83
Error: Expected ')'
Code: 0
URL: http://ageofempiresonline.com/en/AOE11HD_Launcher

It then asks me if I want to continue running scripts on this page? The answer doesn't seem to matter either way because I can still play the game and play online.

This is the URL to the games forum I tryed looking for your problem though I didn't see it yet. I would try looking and posting here yourself maybe they you'll get a better response there.

The error I was getting was this: "An error occurred while installing (unknown error)". I deleted everything in my steam folder but steamapps and the application and now it let me install. It also appears to have solved the crashing problem, but I will have to wait to be sure on that one. I hope this helps someone else.
