Some Games Just Don't Start
I have both XCOM and BioShock: Infinite in my library and they are installed. But when I try to run them they don't start. The steam loading window will pop up briefly (as usual), but then disappear almost as quickly. Then the Steam icon ot the desktop Taskbar will briefly show the synchronizing icon, as if I just exited the game after playing. This will also be brief, and then return to normal.

The games will not start at all; no main menu, no intro credits, no black screen before the intro credits, nothing. I never leave the desktop. The games will not be running through Task Manager either. This does not happen to any other games I have; the rest run fine and always have for years. Its just these two.

Perhaps this is a hardware issue on my end? I'm running on XP with an NVidia card if that matters. I can't imagine it is though since games like Skyrim, Dishonored, and Civilization 5 run fine.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm having problems launching games as well. Games that I played even yesterday (NASCAR 2013) aren't working. Games I had already installed and played frequently (CS:S) aren't working. Games I just bought today aren't working (Half Life).

Key points:

NASCAR gives me error code 80...which doesn't exist on the steam troubleshooting site.

HL gives me an error telling me absolutely nothing.

CS:S gave me a Windows 7 error saying something about not launching. I'm currently reinstalling it.
Edit: CS:S now gives me the unknown steam error. None of my games launch except Minecraft which is a non steam game (I just linked it to my steam library).

Give this a try:
Games do not run after 'Preparing to Launch'

None of those have helped. My video drivers are up to date as of a week ago. DirectX, PhysX, and C++ are up to date. Windows is up to date. Game file caches are verified. Turning off Norton/firewall does nothing different.

Maybe this is relevant: when trying to launch BioShock Infinite manually (by clicking the launcher icon instead of through the Steam Library) I get this error: "The ordinal 345 could not be located in the dynamic link library COMCTL32.dll"

This also happens when I launch BioShock normally but choose the Benchmarking Utility option.

same issues with callof duty ghosts' multiplayer & counter strike source
even though bioshock inf, skyrim, tomb raider, blacklight & others work without any issues
why is steam F*ckin me over :'( ???
can't be software related since other games work just fine so how do we finally get our money's worth to get things working i'm desperate as hell..
I've had BioShock Infinite for a while now and it has never worked. The fact that this problem only affects certain games for certain players (I've been checking this forum, and it comes up a few times), would lead me to believe its because of something on the players' end. But I've tried everything at the link and can't figure out what is wrong on my end.

I really want to play XCOM.
I figured it out.

BioShock Infinite and XCOM both require Windows Vista or above, and I am running Windows XP. I kinda wish this had been made more explicit when purchasing. Or at the very least, a dialogue box from Steam telling me my OS doesn't support the application I'm trying to run. Hell, why did Steam even let me install the games into my Windows XP computer in the first place, if they don't run on it?

There goes $100+ I'll never be getting back, since I've "installed" both games...

Straight from Bioshock's store page.
That doesn't solve my problem. But you should upgrade from XP because even Microsoft is shutting down support for it. It's 10 years old at this point.

Have you tried turning off steams in-game overlay - that solved several games not starting for me

How long has this been happening?
I will gladly upgrade when I get the funds. Until then, though...no XCOM :|

Started yesterday, I even reinstalled all of steam and all my games.

You should no longer be running Windows XP[www.microsoft.com].
Finally I can convince my Dad to upgrade his old computer. :D
Arweryn, perhaps one of the suggestions in this thread can help you:

Windows 8.1 is only $100.

Thats like 2 newly-released AAA games on Steam.
