[HELP] Garrys Mod Source Engine Question

Hello,
I have a question. From some people, I heard that garry's mod on steam (Version 13 im guessing) now has its own source engine. Is that true? So can i buy garrys mod (from Steam) and play it without the source games? I want to buy it today so help would be appreciated asap!

P.S. If it doesnt come with a source engine (and i hope it does because people say that version 13 on steam has its own source engine) then will Team fortress 2 work as a source engine? thanks!

It always uses it's own source engine.. But most mods/addons use stuff from other source games like Counter Strike Source and Half Life 2. There is a list in the game of other games you can select to use stuff from there.

So yes you can get Garry's Mod without owning the other games. But you may not have a lot of mods and adddons you can get. Though I may be wrong if they changed that.

And so does that mean if I dont have counter strike i can't own the guns in the game or something? That would suck! Please tell me that u can still have most of the items

Yes there is a Steam Workshop. But people may have created stuff that uses matarials, models, ect from other Source games. And Garry's Mod doesn't have those included. So you will either get Error models or nothing with some things. Just a heads up about it.

Ok so. Some stuff from the Workshop or Garry's Mod site comes with it's own skins, matarials, ect. So you shouldn't have problems with that. But some things like This Says it requires Counter Strike Source. So you may end up with broken stuff that you downloaded if you don't own and have the required game installed.

Though most of the times it should say what games it has required for it to work.
Weapons like from counter strike are most likely not getable. Since they will use the files from the game which you don't have. So they won't work. You can get some custom made weapons though if it doesn't require another game to be installed.

This is a custom weapon that doesn't need another game to be installed. But most that I found says you will need Counter Strike Source

Counter Strike Source has the most stuff that Garry's Mod wants to use.. So they made a pack for it. If you are gonne buy Garry's Mod and want to play it a lot. Then I reccomend you to buy this. Garry's Mod + Counter Strike Source pack

ok i get what you are saying. Thanks! Another question though, when you start in counter strike I know u start with a machine gun or something. I'm pretty sure its not custom. So does that mean I can still have that without corrupt files and still have some fun? Thanks!
Also, the pictures of those Tf2 guys on the homepage, is that a add on? I have team fortress 2 so i don' think thats a problem. but my friend doesn't so if I play online with him he wont be able to use those team fortress 2 guys right?

All the original weapons from Counter Strike Source are not getable in Garry's Mod if you don't have the game installed. So no you won't be able to use them.

And not the TF2 characther aren't an addon. If you got TF2 installed. Then you can select the game in Garry's Mod. Saying that you have it and you want to use it. And you will be able to use every item and characther model in the Garry's Mod. Your friend should have the game installed too then if he wants to see it. Or else he will see Errors

I found this guide for you if you want to use it. It's about getting CSS content without owning the game. Though it's best if you buy the game with it. But if you got no other choice then I geuss it's fine to do this. The guide isn't removed and it's on for a while.
