Friends List and Chat won't show up when I click them. Games push me to desktop.

Much to my dismay I run Windows 8.1.

I found that sometimes when I run Steam, the library will show up and my taskbar will say I have chats and my friends list active. The thing is when I click the friends/chat, it acts like I never clicked them nor will the windows show up even when I minimize the library. I actually have to resort to using my phone for chat and play games on my computer at the same time, which isn't ideal.

EDIT: Also found a new problem where I cant even play on my game's window as it pushes me to my desktop.

The problem won't go away even if I restart Steam or my computer. I don't even know how it goes back to normal when it decides to fix itself.

Is there a fix to this or do I have to wait for a client update?

Didn't work, unless if the beta's supposed to update the clients over time

Why do recommend beta to fix a problem that is not broken in release client? Beta has bugs and often creates more problems, that is why it is still beta. Time for a dxdiag?

I would first try refreshing or resetting your steam files as Laptop65 suggested.

It doesn't seem to be working. I even opted out of beta and did each step including opening the .exe via the program file folder and the problem still strikes.

Have you considered updating your graphics processing unit driver after installing Windows 8.1? If already up-to-date, repair it, or reinstall it.

I just reinstalled Steam, so far that was the best option and worked. Have to reinstall games but that's not a problem since I couldnt play them before.

are any of you running a 2nd monitor??? i had this issue, then realized i should turn my 2nd monitor ON, and there was my list..... in the middle of my 2nd monitor(i dont always use it, so its mostly off.) check ALL you monitors people! lol.

I had this as well, just now, except I don't even have a second screen! I went into settings and it said I had a second screen, (Which I didn't), so I turned that off and it worked!
