Windows 8.1
My Steam client just will not open in w 8.1.
Steam just will not get on the support tickets for this, Microsoft and iYogi tried for hours to fix it. I Keep getting a "Cannot access connection servers"
Compatibility does not work. Firewall is set for steam. Steam worked fine in W 8.
flushconfig does not work.
Any ideas or help out there?

Create a shortcut to the steam exe. Right click, properties, in the target field add -tcp

Worked for me at least.
tried this, windows will not let this happen
Make sure all your drivers are up to date, as some might need any update for 8.1

Are you having any Network/LAN issues with anything else, or only Steam?

I don't know why it won't work. I just installed it on a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1.

Try to refresh the Steam install?

Good point. This Toshiba had a warning about updating some things even before doing the upgrade to 8.1 and those only came out a few days ago...

None of these standard work arounds seem to work. This needs to be fixed by Steam, but they do not seem to interested in this issue. I have sent them my logs, even...but nothing from them, except they want me to buy Assassin Creed....

That's odd. I have 8.1 and it works for me.

I`ve got the same problem.
At fisrt I`ve tryed to re-download Steam (delete eveything in ur Steam folder, except the Steam.exe and folder steamapps, then just run Steam.exe, and it will download newest version.) But this didn`t worked.

Then I`ve found that about d steam://flushconfig and I`ve combinate it with enableing d MS .net framework 3.5 (U can find it in d Contol panel > Programs > Turn on and off windows components ), which have been mentioned on some forum, after that I`ve restarted pc and Steam star up as usual, downloading works as same as games.
I'm pretty sure updating to Windows 8.1 does something to wipe some drivers and settings. Are you using AMD? Darn thing reset my scaling and whatever Catalyst settings now it's making me redownload GPU drivers I had already installed. Kinda scary. I can't wait to find out what else is missing.
