Launching a game in windowed vs. full screen mode
Currently, whenever I try to load Safecracker: The Ultimate Puzzle Adventure, it launches in windowed mode. I know I played this game before in full screen mode, but for some reason I can't change to that now. There are no in-game options to change the screen resolution. My other Steam games all launch in full screen. How can I get this game to launch in full screen? I'm using Vista 64 Home Premium, if that makes any difference.....

BTW, I looked at the Game Properties and noticed a "Set Launch Options" tab, but it just opens a dialog box with the caveat: "These options are for advanced users only". What kind of options could an "advanced user" change there?

What kind of answer is "nop"? Does it mean something, like "noob on patrol" or what?

I just tried this, but (*sigh*) it didn't change anything. But thanks for the suggestion!

I seem to recall reading somewhere that editing the "bfullscreen = 1" line to "bfullscreen = 0" in some games files might make them display in full screen, but I can't find this game's files to check this parameter, and I don't recall ever changing something like that to begin with. Of course, the last time I played this game was a LOT of brain cells ago....anything could have happened since then.

So, does anyone have any other suggestions? And where is this "bfullscreen" line, and how do I edit it, if it needs editing?

Why? I'm looking for a suggestion that might apply to other games as well. Besides, hardly anyone ever posts on the Safecracker forum, so the question is highly unlikely to get answered there.

Okay, so let me rephrase my original question by leaving out the game title...and then (please) tell me where this should be posted.

If a Steam game (any game) launches only in windowed mode, and there are no in-game settings to set it to fullscreen, is there a way to alter the config file(s) for that game to change it to fullscreen? If so, where does one find the config file for a specific Steam game, what should they edit, and how do they edit it?

Yes. And there is no generic way, it depends on the game and you would have to look it up for that particular game. For Source games you can control window mode by entering the -windowed launch parameter.

Okay, so where do I find the config files for a particular Steam game? I've done a search of my system for anything related to (any of) my Steam games, and all I find is the executable.

And sorry for my ignorance, but what is a "Source game", and how do you enter the "-windowed launch parameter"?

You're right....I don't completely understand, but I think it's becoming more clear. I'm not the most computer literate person in the world, but I can follow directions with the best of 'em.

So Fred (or anyone else who cares to chime in), let's say YOU want to find and edit the config file for a specific game, and let's say that file is hidden, somewhere on your system. In the Windows Vista (or similar) OS, what specific steps would you use for locating and "unhiding" that file?

Well. I figured it out. My problem was that when searching for a (any) Steam game's folder/files, I needed to check the box "Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files" under the Advanced Search option of Explore. Once I did that, I found the game files buried 7 layers deep. I then found the config.ini file and edited the "bfullscreen" line to "= 1" instead of "= 0". Voila! Full screen!

I realize the method I used to find the file will be different on other OS's, but that's how it works in Vista 64....

However now, at least for this particular game, I get some flickering when moving about and when looking at the inventory. I guess there's a tradeoff for everything. Probably has to do with a video card setting....
