One of the first things I tried, didn't do bubkis.
During tests, I made sure all allowed steam through, and then I promptly disabled ALL of them in order to make sure they couldn't interfear anyway.
Nadda. As a side note, these 3 were on the machine previous times when Steam DID work. They were also enabled when I was able to log into it.
This has to be the most frustrating issue in the history of the world, given how damn SPECIFIC it is...
Within Windows Resource Monitor, is it specifically steam.exe that is taking up only large amounts of memory usage? Or others (CPU, Network, Disk?) as well?
Perhaps try to login with your account, update Steam into the Beta version, logout, and then try logging her back into the beta client?
Steam RAM and CPU useage don't look crazy at all, it's about the same amount as on either of the working machines.
I didn't try upgrading her to the beta client. I can give that a shot when her machine is turned back on and I'll report back if it works.
Sounds like you had some issue logging into her PC also. A couple things come to mind. First, when typing a password all you see is **********. Make sure the correct letters are coming up by typing in notepad. (edit, I see that no longer applies, ignore) Second, try a clean boot using msconfig to see if something is interfering. Third, open up device manager and delete the nic drivers, reboot and let it rebuild them. Reboot her router and modem while you are at it. Also try system restore to a time when it did work.
Only issue was lag with the steam client. It did manage to log in, it just took a bit for steam to 'process'.
Password was typed correctly. Haven't tried a clean boot, will give that a shot.
Nic drivers haven't been updated recently at all, but I'll see if she's willing to let me. Honestly, I'd have ripped a lot more stuff apart to fix this but, despite going to school for this, she's unwilling to let me take SOME actions.
Router and Modem are rebooted often, if that was the fix it would of happened. As for System Restore I can promise I won't be allowed to do that, useful as it may be.
Personally, I'm hoping to copy all her games and screenshots and just pave over steam entirelly, starting almost totally fresh, including clearing all registry files via a ccleaner sweep. if THAT can't fix it, we're boned.
Of course..that requires permission to do that.
It sounds like you get this handled if she lets you. If you decide to uninstall Steam you can move the folder with all the game sin it and then move them back.
Also you might try chkdsk just in case something is corrupt.
Is Steam taking up a lot of RAM/Memory, or nothing unusual? I assumed it's memory usage was abnormal.
Also, as a bit of a side-note: Use programs like CCleaner with great moderation. Some Windows resources, like the system registry, cannot be restored other than through an entire Windows reinstall. Not even Windows repair can fix bad registry, nor is there a program to do it automatically. The only way to even start to repair registry keys, would be to do it manually, provided that you have made a backup of it, which is usually very unlikely for anyone to do. In fact, there is a possibility that a partially-corrupt registry could contribute to the reason why it doesn't work. We won't consider that possibility though. It's a bit extensive.
If you read the thread you would know he already plans on doing a reinstall if his mom lets him. Do you ever read the thread or do you always just copy paste the same response before you see if it is warranted?
He already stated he wanted to do a clean Steam install. He just needs his moms permission because apparently it is her computer. Also he sounds capable as he mentioned he has some computer training. I agree that he can likely fix this without formating but formatting is a good idea once in awhile anyway. As long as you have a good backup system it shouldn't be a big deal as recovery partitions make it very painless.
As I said, a LOT of that stuff is stuff I either understand or know how to do. However, this seems to be an oddly documented issue...thus, if we can, in the process of fixing it create new documentation, we're doing good.
I'll post up the Dxdiag later, as NL guessed it is her computer and I don't have the password because I'm nice and haven't just brute forced everything in the house.
Also, I want to do a clean install becaue honestly, It seems like I've tried *everything* for issues like this with no success...only thing I havn't done suggested to me was letting the nic driver refresh itself.
As a side note, it's very hard to fix someones machine when you can't just handle it when you have time and have to 'Hurry up and wait.'
I decided to copy her screenshots in order to preserve them, said screenshots being in the userdata folder. This got me thinking..she has a LOT of screenshots. Like, GIGS worth. This may not bewhat the issue was, but I've been drinking so this was my logic.
As a side note, I'm STILL drunk..so..no promises for spelling.
Anyway, I cut the userdata folder and stuck it on her desktop then told her to login again. It asked for her security verification key, and once putting that in, like magic, without even a hint of lag or waiting, it logged her in.
As i said, I have no idea if my logic was sound but in the end, it worked.
I'm going to go bang my head against a wall for not coming up with this sooner now.
LoL, ok. Awesome, good work.
