One Account unable to login to One Machine
So in my house, there are three people with steam accounts. Myself, my mother, and my girlfriend. We tend to stick to our own personal machines so there's not really much cross-contamination going on, save authorizing steam-sharing.

The issue is this. My Mother has found herself unable to log into her account on her machine. After rigerious testing and pretty much ripping steam out and putting it back in, we are STILL unable to get her logged in. At BEST, steam will try and log her in, and claim no network connection, saying to either retry or offering her offline mode. If you choose offline mode, it then locked up for a significant amount of time, and then it says 'Connecting Steam Account *NAME* which again takes a stupid amount of time. During this, Windows is also reporting it as not responding, despite it eating quite a good chunk of her RAM. As a note, last I checked this hadn't succeeded, still locking her out from being able to play her games.

Now, I tried logging my own account into her machine and other then lagging and taking a bit of time, it managed it. She also logged her account in on my machine and it happened without a hitch.

So, can anyone PLEASE find me a logical reason why one singular account can not be logged in on one singular machine, and only within such a place, with every other machine and account working just fine? It's driven both me and her up a wall, as she's logged a considerable numbers of hours in Skyrim that she's quite worried she may lose at this rate.

Give this a try:
Refresh Your Steam Files

One of the first things I tried, didn't do bubkis.

What protection software do you use?
The machine has Windows Firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials, as well as Malware Bytes Anti-Malware.

During tests, I made sure all allowed steam through, and then I promptly disabled ALL of them in order to make sure they couldn't interfear anyway.

Nadda. As a side note, these 3 were on the machine previous times when Steam DID work. They were also enabled when I was able to log into it.

This has to be the most frustrating issue in the history of the world, given how damn SPECIFIC it is...

Have you tried logging her into her account through a browser on the same machine?

Within Windows Resource Monitor, is it specifically steam.exe that is taking up only large amounts of memory usage? Or others (CPU, Network, Disk?) as well?

Perhaps try to login with your account, update Steam into the Beta version, logout, and then try logging her back into the beta client?

An attempt to log into the browser worked fine.

Steam RAM and CPU useage don't look crazy at all, it's about the same amount as on either of the working machines.

I didn't try upgrading her to the beta client. I can give that a shot when her machine is turned back on and I'll report back if it works.

Sounds like you had some issue logging into her PC also. A couple things come to mind. First, when typing a password all you see is **********. Make sure the correct letters are coming up by typing in notepad. (edit, I see that no longer applies, ignore) Second, try a clean boot using msconfig to see if something is interfering. Third, open up device manager and delete the nic drivers, reboot and let it rebuild them. Reboot her router and modem while you are at it. Also try system restore to a time when it did work.

Only issue was lag with the steam client. It did manage to log in, it just took a bit for steam to 'process'.

Password was typed correctly. Haven't tried a clean boot, will give that a shot.

Nic drivers haven't been updated recently at all, but I'll see if she's willing to let me. Honestly, I'd have ripped a lot more stuff apart to fix this but, despite going to school for this, she's unwilling to let me take SOME actions.

Router and Modem are rebooted often, if that was the fix it would of happened. As for System Restore I can promise I won't be allowed to do that, useful as it may be.

Personally, I'm hoping to copy all her games and screenshots and just pave over steam entirelly, starting almost totally fresh, including clearing all registry files via a ccleaner sweep. if THAT can't fix it, we're boned.

Of course..that requires permission to do that.

It sounds like you get this handled if she lets you. If you decide to uninstall Steam you can move the folder with all the game sin it and then move them back.

Also you might try chkdsk just in case something is corrupt.

Is Steam taking up a lot of RAM/Memory, or nothing unusual? I assumed it's memory usage was abnormal.

Also, as a bit of a side-note: Use programs like CCleaner with great moderation. Some Windows resources, like the system registry, cannot be restored other than through an entire Windows reinstall. Not even Windows repair can fix bad registry, nor is there a program to do it automatically. The only way to even start to repair registry keys, would be to do it manually, provided that you have made a backup of it, which is usually very unlikely for anyone to do. In fact, there is a possibility that a partially-corrupt registry could contribute to the reason why it doesn't work. We won't consider that possibility though. It's a bit extensive.

Reinstall Steam according to this article:
Uninstall Steam

Share a DirectX Diagnostics[windows.microsoft.com] log with us.

1. Open the Start menu, type "dxdiag" and press Enter.
2. Select Yes if you are questioned about confirming digitally signed drivers.
3. If available, click "Run 64-bit DxDiag" right from the button "Help".
4. Click "Save All Information...", save the file, and then open the file.
5. Copy the document content to Pastebin[pastebin.com] with a one week paste expiration and an unlisted paste exposure and share it with us.

Do not give up.

If you read the thread you would know he already plans on doing a reinstall if his mom lets him. Do you ever read the thread or do you always just copy paste the same response before you see if it is warranted?

I replied because it is not smart to format just for this issue. I have helped somebody in the past with a similar issue and it ended up being resolved through my guidance.

He already stated he wanted to do a clean Steam install. He just needs his moms permission because apparently it is her computer. Also he sounds capable as he mentioned he has some computer training. I agree that he can likely fix this without formating but formatting is a good idea once in awhile anyway. As long as you have a good backup system it shouldn't be a big deal as recovery partitions make it very painless.

First off, NL, stop yelling at Fred. A lot of what he's posted is stuff I already know how to do. However, as he said, I may not be the only one with this issue. The only reason i MADE this thread is I couldn't find someone ELSE who had experienced this issue AND found a fix that worked for me, so if this serves as a record to someone less skilled then not only have I helped my mother, I've also helped others in the future.

As I said, a LOT of that stuff is stuff I either understand or know how to do. However, this seems to be an oddly documented issue...thus, if we can, in the process of fixing it create new documentation, we're doing good.

I'll post up the Dxdiag later, as NL guessed it is her computer and I don't have the password because I'm nice and haven't just brute forced everything in the house.

Also, I want to do a clean install becaue honestly, It seems like I've tried *everything* for issues like this with no success...only thing I havn't done suggested to me was letting the nic driver refresh itself.

As a side note, it's very hard to fix someones machine when you can't just handle it when you have time and have to 'Hurry up and wait.'

I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

I decided to copy her screenshots in order to preserve them, said screenshots being in the userdata folder. This got me thinking..she has a LOT of screenshots. Like, GIGS worth. This may not bewhat the issue was, but I've been drinking so this was my logic.

As a side note, I'm STILL drunk..so..no promises for spelling.

Anyway, I cut the userdata folder and stuck it on her desktop then told her to login again. It asked for her security verification key, and once putting that in, like magic, without even a hint of lag or waiting, it logged her in.

As i said, I have no idea if my logic was sound but in the end, it worked.

I'm going to go bang my head against a wall for not coming up with this sooner now.
