When you say other games, I gather you mean controller is working for non-Steam games?
First, double check the Steam settings for controller. Check Setttings>Controller and see if it'showing up at all. If it is, then focus on tinkering with Steam controller settings.
If it's not showing up here's what fixed my issue:
Go to Windows> Control Panel> Devices and Printers
You mention controllers works in other games, so should be visible here. Find your controller, right click, select "Game Controller Settings". You should see a window with "Reset to default" button. Click this.
Now, if you get this far, you can also use the "Test' tab and this will at least give you confidence that Windows settings is not the issue. If you confirm its working in Windows Game Controller settings then you should experiment with toggling Steam controller settings.
It's a wireless Xbox controller.
I've ticked and unticked everything in steam controller settings but nothing helps
Can you make sure you have no other applications running that use controller? Any clients like Gog, etc, close out of every single program including Steam, and then only open Steam.
Xbox controller, you mean 360 or One? Whatever the case these kind are probably the most compatible with Steam so the issue your having is a bit unusual in that respect.
Yeah, it's unusual that it worked fine up until the update, and now, nothing!
Please check: Does it specifically say "No controller detected" or does it show a "Rumble" toggle switch?
Is this connected using Bluetooth? Or Xbox Wireless adaptor?
There's also a button "Xbox extended feature support driver>Install". Click that.
Done this, nothing
Still nothing
