What happens if a friend buys a game I scheduled as a gift?

This is a 2023 question - all info I could find regards ~2014 era gifts which were handled differently as inventory items, etc.

So, occasionally I do buy birthday gifts for some of my friends. But since I don't value the friendship enough to buy the games at full prices, I do so in advance during sales, sometimes two to three months before the actual birthday.

What would hypothetically happen if my friend were to get the same title on their own before the scheduled date of delivery? Do I get my gift instantly refunded? Does the gift vanish into nirvana? Did i uncovered a glitch in the matrix and am now targeted by Gaben's hit squads?

Oh, so it's simply greying out the other button? I guess that works.
