Steam playing ad in the backgroud as soon as a game launches (steam client webhelper)
As the title says i can hear an ad in the background when i launch a game and when i go to see where the sound is coming from it says "steam client webhelper" I did a virus scan with bitdefender and it came back with nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I dont know if its an actual virus or i'm just dumb.

Forgot to mention it also seemingly opens steam back up when I close it in task manager.
What kind of ad? Is it maybe a video you once watched on store page of a game?
Lately someone wrote he started a game when watching a video, and since then that video allways plays when he starts the game.
Was caused by steams update.

An ad for a video game forsure. It is also the same ad that plays it does not seem to change. I imagine i probably have in the past, although i cant pinpoint exactly when or what i was watching.

Contact and report this to Official Steam Support so they can add it to the pile of things they have to fix in the new UI disaster. Follow these instructions and use the old UI.

reinstalling steam seems to have fixed the issue? I no longer hear the same ad after opening games up and steam client webhelper is no longer under the volume mixer.

Memory leak issue with the new UI.

I'm experiencing this after the update too, and it's irritating. My games are also lagging after the update and when I open a for-sale game in a new window to check on it, you can see that it is still loading but you can already hear the advertisement playing.

I have the exact same issue starting 2 days ago, only I get completely random ads like Kia, Liberty Mutual, Sensodyne etc... Strangest thing is that it only happens when I play Roots of Pacha and no other games.

SOLUTION: I opted in to Steam Beta, then opted out. Seems like the issue is resolved.

If you don't want to follow the solution I posted previously a lot of people have found that these sounds are coming from the overlay. SHIFT+TAB while playing a game and close the windows the sound(s) are coming from.

Yep. I noticed this too with the new overlay. If you search for something on youtube using the new browser in steam. That tab will remain open. So once you re-launch the game the tabs get refreshed and you will hear youtube ads playing along with game audio.

It is really stupid and a bit of an oversight. Since the tabs no longer close on their own like it used to with older version of steam. Just make sure to close all tabs before closing the game to prevent it from happening again.
Does "delete web browser data" in settings close tabs?

No. It clears Cookies and temporary files like images that are cached in Steams Web Browser. Doing that might help matters, it won't hurt to do it if it doesn't help. It actually might help with this issue. It also won't hurt anything to clear the Web Browser's cache. There's an option for that hidden somewhere in the maze of the new UI's settings dialog.

Both of those, even the official FAQ page, is out of date because they're the old UI.
The options to do those things are hopefully still in the new UI somewhere.
There needs to be a button to close all tabs. What a waste to keep tabs open and you can only close them in each game overlay.

A fix is coming soon as per latest beta.

"Steam Client Beta - July 21st
The Steam Client Beta has been updated with the following changes:

Steam Overlay

Changed behavior of overlay tabbed browser to clear all tabs when the close button is clicked and added a minimize button to hide the browser as the close button previously did."
