New Steam Client - Double Click on icon opens store, not friends
This new UI update is trash. Half the time I double-click on the tray icon, it does nothing. I have to right click and select "Friends" to open it.

Further, when it DOES respond to double-click, it opens the store. Look Valve, I understand you want us to buy stuff. But this is dumb. Historically I've been able to select what happens when I double-click the icon, and I'd like the ability to set that back to Friends.

Something went wrong while displaying this content. Refresh

In the target window you'll see "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe". (assuming that's your default location). Add -vgui to the end of it and click Apply. Open Steam. Go to Settings then Interface. Second option down, change it back to Friends. Click Ok. Done.

Target window should look like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -vgui

Old UI back with Friends List now the default as it was before.

If you simply want the old UI back, then just add -vgui and change whatever you like.

Check the Steam settings and then under Interface. It probably reset the setting for you. I have mine set on Library and doubleclicking the tray icon opens the library every single time.

It's not there with the new UI.

It is: https://imgur.com/a/snrHHG0

And I just tested it. Setting it to Store or Friends will bring the client to the proper one when doubleclicking the tray icon. I set it back to library again and it goes to the library when doubleclicking the tray icon.

That is the "Start up" location. Not the selection for when you double-click the icon. Far different. Further, "Friends List" is not an option. Your available options are:

Store
Libary
News
Friend Activity
Community Home

So no, it is not there in the new UI settings.

It's asetting for the "default Window". This setting also determines the behaviour of the doubleclicking on the tray icon. It's possible they had two settings before and merged it, but as I said, I just tested it and whichever I choose in that menu is where the doubleclicking on the tray icon takes my client to.

Again, it does not have an option to open the Friends list, which was my initial ask. "Friends Activity" is not "Friends List". So no, your suggestion still does not meet the initial issue that was presented.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

And there's the solution. The new GUI is OK, but it needs to have the features of the old GUI. Thank you!

That's not very clear. Are you clicking on a game title in the list? That's why it's launching a game.
If you want a desktop shortcut to open the friends list append this to the target line of the shortcut:

+open steam://open/friends

Note: Will not work if you're using the old UI.

no i mean i have a game running, i alt tab to something else and decide i want to quickly browse steam so i double click the taskbar icon and nothing happens so i click it another 10 times, go back to my game and its opened 10 store browsers in the ingame overlay instead of on the desktop where i was

i restard cs-go just to repair my steam overlay, steam overlay refuses to close tabs, refuses to close every sincle window, i want to close all window with the players profiles it doesn't work, i want to close my friend list doesn't work, even if you capable of moving them ...

The navigation from a tab to another also blocks, closing a tab request 2 clicks... The steam overlay is extremly clunky and should be pull back in beta and not tested like this on large scale...

oy that sucks! Glad I'm not using the new UI and rarely use the overlay. I alt+tab and use a browser window or click the Steam Client window in the taskbar, not an icon.

These are both issues that should be brought to official support's attention so they consider correcting the mess it creates and the inconvenience it is.

i mean clicking the thing on the bottom right of the taskbar so i assume thats the same thing you click?

fix so far is to disable the overlay entirely
