Can't remove screenshots from Steam with new GUI if I deleted them on disk
I often take lots of screenshots in games and then just open the screenshot folder and open the screenshots in a screenshot viewer and delete the ones I don't need with the DEL key which is faster than doing the same thing in Steam. Obviously the screenshots can't be displayed after that in Steam. Instead it's showing just a black picture. With the old GUI I could just select all the black pictures and delete them from Steam. With the new GUI that's not possible anymore. It won't let me remove those screenshots. I had to open Big Picture mode to delete the missing screenshots one by one. Is there any better mode to delete multiple "missing" screenshots at once?

Does ctrl button and mouse click work to mark more than one?

It works for the ones that are still on the disk, but the missing ones can't be clicked at all.

The thumbnail you may need to delete as well to make drunk Steam to understand. I do that as well and of course back June 14th update, this used to be done by deleting any image wiped from the disk through 'screenshot manager'. Now...well I have reverted to old client. But I did given some tests before downgrading this update, which when you're on new 'screenshot manager'. You will have to erase these image thumbnails stored on the disk to make Steam to erase properly these blank question mark.

I tried that and deleted all thumbnails of the deleted screenshots, but they were still present in the screenshot manager even after restarting Steam.

Try removing content in subfolders in <PROGRAM_FILES_x86>\Steam\userdata\<YOUR_ACC_ID>\760\remote\screenshots, does this help?
@Xodan Rot:
Try what Oaky Leaf has referred to do.

Is there a solution for this problem? I'm using the latest client. I removed some 400 screenshots using Windows File Explorer, then noticed the missing image icons ("there was a problem loading this screenshot").

I tried deleting thumbnails in Steam\userdata ... remote ... screenshots\thumbnails, then restarted Steam, but missing images are still shown. I also tried to then take a new screenshot with the same game, then also restarted steam again but this didn't help either.

Bringing this back up to the table.. Steam needs to fix this.. I got half a dozen images all cant be deleted through the UI :D

A workaround that i have found however is when you click to select all and delete them it will delete the missing ones as well from the UI.. that of course deletes all of the images for that game though.

Same thing here, I even restored the screenshots from the recycle bin hoping it would bring back the images in steam but it didn’t.

* Nvm what I just said, it actually worked. If you still have the pictures in your recycle bin, just restore them and delete them from steam.
If you already emptied your recycle bin after deleting the pictures from your computer disk but still have the thumbnails of the deleted pictures, just copy/paste the thumbnails back in the screenshots folder and they will show up on steam again.
It’s a pain for me to delete them directly from steam because the interface is slow but ig I’ll have to do that for now.

Ooooooh, this is great! So basically, we trick Steam Screenshot Manager into believing that the thumbnails ARE the missing images, so we then delete them as per regular Steam procedure! I am ashamed of myself for not having thought this on my own, given the fact that I tried a lot of things to fix this behavior (which, by the way, is simply bad coding and/or bad testing from devs at Valve or whatever), things which of course did not work. Now, to be even dumber on my side, I deleted the thumbs as well, and emptied the bin, but I almost certainly can recover them via previous backups.
Thank you for your ingenious answer/suggestion/solution!

I managed to workaround it by selecting all and then deselecting the ones I want to keep, then deleting all. If you have a lot of screenshots, that would be super tedious, so I would recommend just deleting them from the UI from now on, that's probably what im going to do.

Thank you! This worked perfectly.

Instead of doing the 'Select All', you can also use 'Shift' to select a custom range of images and then deselect from there.

i have found a workaround for this, only works if you still have the thumbnail of the screenshot you deleted, just find the respective thumbnail, copy it into the screenshot folder and now it will show up in steams screenshot manager, since the thumbnails and proper screenshots share the same file name, if you have neither the thumbnail nor original screenshot, you can still try to find the name of them in the vdf file in the 760 folder and then just make some images with the name you found there, alternatively you can edit the vdf file and manually delete entries as well as the files, but i dont trust myself with that or giving detailed advice on it

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
