SOLVED: Steam, let us disable the Friends autostart!
I don't use it. I don't need it popping up automatically every time I start the damned client. We used to be able to kill it - that's gone now, it seems - but I want that back.

UPDATE: THANK YOU DESMOND

If it doesn't work then let's hope valve comes up with a better update next time.

I fixed it by enabling the option, click sign in, close the window, exit Steam, reopen Steam, you should be online and the window doesn't pop up. Then disable the option, go offline, close the window, restart Steam and it should stay closed.

One addition: go back online from the steam menu after last restart

This arcane ritual has somehow exorcised the autostarting friends/chat client. Can I get an amen?

Also Steam signs you in even when you stay offline, just like the old Steam app. You can see "Last online" resetting each time you open Steam.

Welcome to the real Steam public beta.

Thanks - already tried this, no luck.

edit:
It just came back after a few days. I did the same steps but no dice. What works this time is simply disabling the option while I'm online. Restart Steam you should be good (or at least until it breaks again lol. Steam fix your crap fr).

YES! This seems to have done the trick! Thanks a million.

Now maybe someone at Steam can get off his butt and put the option back where it used to be so we don't have to do the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Macarena of enabling, disabling and restarting fifty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times just to have it the way it was!

This seems to have done it. Thanks.

Can we clarify? I am able to fix auto-login. I am NOT able to fix the window popping up that says "signed out of friends & chat." Is this fix only for preventing the login?

I did exactly as Desmond suggested and the Friends/Chat window no longer autolaunches with Steam.

When I manually open it, it shows me as offline.

Just checked it again and it's still working. Hopefully the geniuses at Steam won't patch it out.

glad to know that Desmond's solution worked out in the end. Now time for me to search the discussions again and deal with the second issue that I don't like
Friends uses steam chrome which is a resource hog

I have just tried this method twice and unfortunately it's not working for me... Could reverting Steam back to the old UI fix this entirely? It would especially be useful if it wouldn't secretly sign you in like new Steam does... ("Last online just now" or whatever, very creepy!)

It did work for me.
Make sure you close steam off completely, ether by the system tray icon (normaly a steam icon in the botem right near the clock on the dektop) or with the stask manager (Ctrl Alt Delete)

The X in the top of steam it self does just kill the window but it still runs in the back ground.
