Steam Input w/ Non-Game/Destop Layout Bugged(?) After Client Update June 2023 (Xbox One Controller)
So for a while, I've been using Steam Input and the old Desktop Configuration option as a workaround to play Minecraft Java Edition since that non-Steam game does not have controller support. I just can't do m&k. And it worked to an extent. It did what I wanted it to do. But that doesn't have much to do with the issue.

The issue is trying to enable and disable "non-game input". It seems like after first enabling it today, when I then tried to disable Steam Input, it continued to use Steam Input for the desktop anyways despite the fact. Viewing the Desktop Layout for the controller afterwards and then closing it causes the feature to update properly to the correct settings (input actually stops). But then if I want to enable it again, simply enabling Steam Input doesn't actually enable the non-game input, though I don't really see any obvious signs telling you how to enable it either. Other than checking the Desktop Layout again and then closing it again.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that currently the client does a poor job explaining how to enable/disable non-game input, if it's even working right. Before the update, all I had to do was enable or disable Steam Input, though was there even a way to disable non-game input specifically previously in the first place? I can't remember and I can't check now, so if there wasn't a way before, there is now, so that's an alright thing, I guess.

Maybe in the future you could add another toggle that clearly says whether the Desktop Layout input is enabled or disabled. And please sync Steam Input settings properly with it too.

Posted this earlier in the wrong place and deleted that post. My bad.

Try ask MS xbox one controller support, let them deal with steam, if they can proof this is a steam mistake.

you use a controll by that Brand so technicaly its that product problem

same goes with other Brand, im sure you dont see it like that, and it dont help with what system say, but its been ongoing for years controller issue and game devs that support them even ask own game devs is part of the issue, let me say it like this, steam most have a good reason to change all of this, its like they want to fix show right controll image per controller, all this was not there before, and you can find many steam user that has see the many change, maybe the Controller brand should be better and know what steam is doing and test own product with them online client, there is many online client with same game, so this is a controller issue all this should be fixed and update by own controller support, and autodetect for change or update, i dont recall my old xbox360 had any issue at all, other thern reciver died and thats still not steam faulth.

i think you can find over 1000 of post with controller issue atm or post with it.

ask any other helper here, its like controller is not worth it, they brake down so much and look like cheap hardware atm. (i cant be the only one that see this like that ) piece of junk.

Quality of product, aient good enough.

Well I know that everyone has been finding plenty of bugs to report right now. Seems like anything with an update nowadays just doesn't want to work right and a lot of issues come from new-but-unnecessary features that devs add. Seems normal at this point. And while the issue here is kind of annoying, it can be worked around, so it's not super bad unless they leave it alone and it gets worse after some more patches/updates.

Besides, I'm not going to contact Microsoft over anything unless I have a really bad problem with their products/content. I have my own issues with them and don't trust them to do anything smart at the moment. They probably wouldn't get involved with this issue anyways unless it really impacted them somehow.

Not sure if this is what you're already doing:
Steam > Settings > Controller > Desktop Layout [Edit] > gear icon > Disable Steam Input > Confirm

I see the issue you describe of requiring a close/re-open for things to update, it worked properly some updates ago in the beta.

The enable/disable Steam Input is the other way around with the Desktop Layout in your example when I do it. But that's basically the process I go through to enable or disable it. I don't even press anything else when I open the Desktop Layout. I just immediately close it and it updates. It still works, but it just seems really wonky right now.

I solved it for me, was having this issue using a Playstation DS4 Controller

I just want to add some information after bashing my head against the wall, reading the helpful suggestions here and elsewhere. Here is what I found for my DS4 Controller which would no longer even function on the Desktop anymore.

I couldn't edit the Desktop layout it simply wouldn't let me access the configuration screen, and I couldn't even CLICK the Gear Icon.

Ultimately what made it work was seeing a new interface option in the Settings > Controller screen I hadn't seen before. Looks like it's from a recent Beta update. Anyways...

In the Controller screen there is an option Playstation Controller Support and I changed the setting from Enabled in games w/o Support to Enabled.

That fixed it for me. I could now see and edit my Desktop configuration, click the Gear icon, and the controller would again work on the desktop (which I use for lazy bedtime mousing). I had to reconfigure the whole control scheme from the ground up because it automatically reset to default, but at least it works now.

Thank you that helped me as well. I got a dualsense edge and I thought it was a problem with that one. Then I connected the normal dual sense and was the same (layout not editable and empty). Then I connected my usual Nacon where I used the desktop config for years...and was the same.

Weird name for the option, I thought it was related to games only, not to the desktop as well ahah
