Can't stop Steam from running on system startup (Win8.1)
OK, so I can't disable Stem autorun on system startup:

- Obviously, the "Run Steam when my computer starts" is unchecked in settings
- There is no startup entry in task manager
- Didn't find any registry entry with "steam" in it related to startup autorun
- Used Sysinternals "Autoruns" tool but that too didn't show any Steam entry
- Steam client service is set to manual

So as far as I can tell there is no way Steam can run automatically. And yet it does. I had to miss something but I have no idea where else to look... Any ideas?

I might have missed something in registry, tho I think I did check all places related to autorun...

msconfig
after doing this go to startup > uncheck steam client > ok > restart your PC

Yeah... If you actually bothered to read what I wrote, you'd notice that I do not have entry for steam client in startup settings.

Hi, I know this entry is super old but has anyone found a solution for this problem? My new Windows 10 laptop has the same issue. Deleting Steam and reinstalling it didn't help either.

Is there anything else in the autostart that would launch Steam? Any steam://-URL-link?

Wow, thank You for Your fast reply!!
No, in my taskmanager autostart I only got Dropbox, iTunes and the Windows Defender notification icon and in regedit (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run) there's just the iTunes Helper, Windows Defender and something called "(Standard)" with "value not set". Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run there's just the (Standard) thing.

Check Autoruns, hide all Windows stuff and list all the rest.

Phew, okay, all working fine now!
Autoruns showed one Steam entry which I disabled. After restarting my laptop Steam didn't start automatically, but when I started it manually it showed some kind of error message saying something needed to be installed again. I hit "OK" and then I could start Steam normally. After restarting the laptop once again Steam now works fine and finally stopped the autostart.
Thank You so much and sorry for bothering!
