Ok the only place I can see anything to do with changing servers is under view/servers and seems only to do with Multiplayer games. I'm playing Civ 5 and it won't load. So not sure how changing a server will help that.

I changed my download server, but it hung up while trying to 'sync' to the cloud again, so had to click 'exit now' anyway, which is the same procedure I go through every time this happens. It's the restarting that seems to fix it, rather than any changes I am making. But why does it keep happening? I can post to the steam community forums, and navigate around the store and everything while it says "no connection" at the bottom. i just can't get it to connect to load the game.

Ok for kicks when my game fails to load I went to the view server list and I tried connecting to any of the game servers, and immediately got "server is not responding" no matter what server I tried.

Ok. So I went into my settings on my mac because when it would load the game successfully it would first tell me I need to enable permissions for the Steam overlay thingee (wish I had copied the dialog but I can't remember the exact wording). When it would hang, it would hang before this dialog ever showed up.

I was not enabling it and was just playing the game as it was. So this time I enabled it as instructed.

The options to enable it are in "system preferences" "security and privacy" "accessibility" and then I checked "steam.app" and saved those prefs. So far so good. Hope this solves it. I will play for a few days and see if it does it again.

Ok, it did it again. So basically nothing I've done has changed anything. Sigh. The only way to prevent it is to remember to close down Steam before your computer gets put into sleep mode.
