Please be more specific.
I have tried opening dota 2, civ 5, rome 2 and other games but they will not launch.
It just says preparing to launch.

This just started happening to me on a fully updated Macbook pro retina display. The only thing that fixes it is quitting steam and then trying again. It may have been happening for a longer time, but I don't know. I had been playing steam games on my PC instead of my mac, but just recently decided to load Civ5 up on my mac again.

Reset Steam files.
what does that mean? "reset steam files"? I have never heard of doing that.

I just tried verifying my local game files/cache and it doesn't do anything. Sits there on 0% doing nothing. It happens only every other time I try to start the game. (In this case it is Civ5, as I don't have anything else installed on my Macbook). And as I said when I quit Steam and restart it when it does this, then it all works fine.

ok, I did that, but it got stuck on syncing Steam Cloud. (which is what it does when I try to quit if it gets stuck on "preparing to launch"). Clicking "Ok" does nothing, so I have to click "exit now." Reopening steam and starting the game works the time after I do this.

SO I thought, well, usually I close my computer/ let my computer go to sleep after playing, so I tried that. And got the same problem happening again. However at least this time it finally popped up an error saying it was unable to sync to steam cloud, and offered me a button to "play now" - which successfully launched the game.

Change your Steam download server?
Not sure how to do that either (I will look it up if I run into this again). But the problem seems to have stopped now even after a few cycles of putting my macbook into sleep mode and waking again. It seems like it was having trouble syncing and yet wouldn't pull up that secondary error message that allowed me to launch the game anyway. Whatever resetting the steam files did, seems to have fixed that. Thank you Laptop65!

It's in your Steam options.
Thanks. I rarely have need to explore them as I haven't run into any issues on my mac version (and usually play on my PC anyway). If I run into it again I'll look into it. But thank you.
OK, have fun.
Ok. it's doing it again. Sigh. I was just playing last night and it was fine. Bottom of Steam also says "no connection" for some reason, even though I am connected.
