Cant chose an install location?
So i was running out of hard drive space on my laptop so i hooked up a 1 TB external drive, all my games work fine, except for left 4 dead 2. For some reason when i got an update for left 4 dead 2 it was putting the files in my old steam folder. My initial thought was "Ill just uninstall left 4 dead 2 and install it into the external drive that way all the updates dont go to the old steam folder. When I reinstalled left 4 dead 2, 2 things happend. 1. It didnt let me pick and install location, so after that I just installed it to see what it would do. 2. When it installed, it didn't install anything, the download took 1 second and all that happened when I went to left 4 dead 2s directory it was just a folder named left 4 dead 2 and nothing more. Has anyone ever had anything remotley similar to this problem? I am installing the left 4 dead 2 beta than i will install left 4 dead 2 and see if that does anything, i also set my new steam games installation location and it still donwloaded it to the old location.

When you begin to install Left 4 Dead 2, do you not see this[dl.dropboxusercontent.com] screen? If not, what's different? (Components of the small window only, I have a custom skin enabled)

That screen does show up but all it says is you are about to install left 4 dead 2, it doesnt show the disk space required, the location its installing, or the space it will take up.

Just to make sure, you don't have a custom skin enabled, right? If you do, see if there are updates for it.

Try updating to the Steam Beta Client:
Settings >> Account >> Beta Participation >> Change... >> Steam Beta Update

I did do the steam beta update, but i dont have any custom skins though, i dont even know how you would get that.

Okay, no need to worry about the skins part then. Try installing the game, now that you're in the beta client.

Nope nothing changed, i still had that blank pop up screen when installing it and it downloaded it within a second, plus it didnt even move to my steam folder in the external drive, it just made a steam folder on my other hard drive, and put a left 4 dead 2 folder in it that had nothing installed on it, im also trying to install the left 4 dead 2 beta to see if that will help with anything

Go into your Steam Settings, click on "Downloads", and select "Steam Library Folders". Click on "Add Library Folder" and select your external hard drive.
After that, see if the install window changes at all.

I would try restarting your computer. It's strange that it gives you nearly no information.

I'm still wondering what would cause it.

Still didnt work, unfortanelty. I must have screwed something up when i transferred my games over to the external drive. But all i did was go off of steam support on how to move steams location. The only thing i can think that i did was when i logged onto steam i immediatley had an update and i was just checking the original steam folder to see if there was anything still in there. Sure enough, it had a couple of left 4 dead files from the update. so i deleted those, and uninstalled left 4 dead, then i try to reinstall it and boom, this happens.

You looked at the support page for moving "Steam" itself, or Steam games?

steam itself im pretty sure. It said to delete everything except for steamapps and cut and paste the steam folder to where you want to move it.

Personally, I would keep Steam on the hard drive of your computer, and just have your games installed to the external hard drive. It's also not recommended on the FAQ as well. If your installation is on the external drive, try moving it back to your internal storage. You'll be able to keep your games on your external drive by creating the Steam Library on that drive.
