1 - It has more than 6000000 users, so that's a lot of traffic. If the site doesn't make the necessary investments to upgrade their capacity, ♥♥♥♥ crashes.
2 - More importantly: the owners/mods are know to get a little overzealous from time to time, banning people for merely expressing an opinion and stuff like that. As a result, the site is frequently targeted by ddos attacks from unhappy (ex-) users.
I know it sucks. Earlier tonight I decided to start another playthrough in FO:NV so I deleted everything so I could have a clean install to install a whole new selection of mods for this playthrough. Now I'm stuck with the vanilla game. Wish I hadn't reinstalled now...
Edit: if only Nexusmods was not the only place to get all those mods. I don't know who they kissed and who they kicked to gain the right to monopolize all these mods, but they did something that made it so. Meaning no one can acces any of those mods anywhere else when their ♥♥♥♥ is down. Their monopoly surely helps their wallets, but it doesn't help us gamers.
You could try Moddb, but they don't have that many mods and they are not as recent as the ones on Nexus.
