Saitek Cyborg with Steam? (OS X)

Hey there, I'm hoping to gain insight into how to make this gamepad work with Steam as it does with non-Steam games.
-Saitek Cyborg Rumble pad (USB)
-OS X Lion
Once I've launched a game in Steam, the first press of "start" is received, but all input after that is ignored.

I've now been continuously told that I'm supposed to download an X360 emulator and ROMs to use this pad. That seems a little extreme, and I'm not even sure it's legal to recommend, so I'm not open to recommendations of console emulation. (Or I would have done so in the first place instead of buying games online ;P)

My housemate (also running Lion) says he has used this controller with Steam before, but is also stumped with the issue here.
Is there some kind of input mapping tool in Steam that's maybe just hard to find?
I would really like to investigate this issue into the ground before I refund all my games.
Can anyone give me any insight on how to fix this issue?
