Change default download/install location?
I got a new hard drive for Christmas, so I installed it and moved my games onto it. But whenever I download a new game, the default location is my old hard drive (where Steam is installed). I know I can just change it every time I download something, but I always forget. Is there any way to make my new HDD the default location? I'll even move my Steam installation if that would work.

steam- settings -download -change folder.
I forgot to mention, I already added the new HDD to the download locations. It's just not the DEFAULT one, and that's what I want it to be. Thanks anyway.
That will be the new default folder for any installed games.

It isn't - my default location is still C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps instead of E:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps :S
Ok well thats odd. I was just giving this option a quick test and every new game i click to start an install goes to the new location.
It's not for me. I dunno what's going on tbh but since I rarely remember to change locations before downnloading, I could really do with it being the default. Maybe if I restart Steam it'll work.
Yeah could try a restart, also, Did you try the steam beta at all?

The new options look like this.

I can add installation folders, but it always defaults to the steam install directory. I think it'd be great to be able to chose the default installation folder.... especially as the new options (even those linked on eram's screenshot) dont' actually allow you to choose a default.

and yes, I'm in the steam beta versions.

Yes, exactly the same here.
No news on this?

It's very annoying that such a basic thing is not implemented. Specially considering that Big Picture mode doesn't let you select the directory to install the game, at least they should allow you to set a default. Big Picture always installs it in C:
In the latest Steam versions, just click Steam -> Settings -> Downlaods -> Steam Library Folders -> Make/Add the relative folders, RIGHT click on the folder you want to make default and click "Make Default Folder." Hope this helps.

This still doesn't work for me, it says that my second drive is the default but it still takes my first drive when I want to download a game.
For anyone coming to an old thread:

I had the same issue! Finally fixed it by going into the Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders, then right-clicking the drive in question and hitting "Repair".
I have an SSD (C:\ drive) where I installed my PUBG to and a normal D:/ drive where I have Dead Space and Crossout on. My D:/ drive is dying and I can't copy files onto it or delete or uninstall files from it.
I cant uninstall games off my D:/ drive.
I can't repair or remove my steam install folder from D:/ drive
I have PUBG on C:\ but when it updates it downloads the update to D:/ drive and then installs it to PUBG in C:\
My PUBG update fails every time cos D:\ will go to (Not Responding) whenever it is used and cause the update to Driver Error.

How do I change where my downloaded updates go to? so that im not using D:\ drive at all?

At the tippy top where it says Steam - View - Friends - Games - Help
Pick "Steam" and then "Settings"
Then go down to where it says "Downloads"
Then at the top where it says "Steam Library Folders" - click that
Then Add a Library Folder to the new drive you want to use as Default.
After you have added the drive/new install location of games...
And it is showing up in your Steam Library Folders section
Inside that window
Right-Click on the drive you want as default and select "Make Default Folder"
Click Close.. click Okay..
Voila!
